Wonderful Weekly | 51

It is week #51. Advent is about to give way to Christmastide.

This last week was a lovely and overflowing series of gatherings. On Sunday morning we worshipped and talked about the practice of feasting. Then we gathered on Sunday night for our 77th Annual Candlelight Carol Service. Oh my, what a night! Now we turn our attention toward this final Advent Sunday and then our Christmas Eve service of light (6pm in the Chapel). So, in the spirit of getting to the point, here are the updates for the week…

Sunday Worship

This coming Sunday morning we will be exploring the image of “light” as it connects and informs our Advent and Christmas traditions. We will use John 1 as our guide. One of my favorite blessings in John O’Donohue’s book of blessings is “For Light.” The last stanza…

And when we come to search for God,
Let us first be robed in night,
Put on the mind of morning
To feel the rush of light
Spread slowly inside
The color and stillness
Of a found word.

Practical Benedictions

During the month of December, we understand that financial pressures can mount. If you are experiencing financial vulnerability that is bringing you stress and worry, please reach out to our staff. We have a special fund that our Board of Deacons helps to manage for emergency community needs. To learn more or to share a need, please email our staff here.

Turning Towards 2020

You might notice below that next year’s calendar is starting to fill out. We are excited to lean into this next decade with intention and purpose, and thrilled to have you along for the ride. You will find ways to connect deeper with our community through gatherings like Second Sunday Coffee with Pastor John Jay, BASICS class for those exploring membership, and our next Community Dinners to find new best friends and eat great food.

Also, I am itching to get into the teachings for next year. We will look at generosity, the Seven Deadly Sins tradition, approaching Jerusalem in Lent, Joesph and forgiveness in Easter, and some fun surprises in the summer. I have a stack of books waiting to be explored and a head full of ideas. Plus a heart full of affection for our community, with whom the work of faith often feels more like play than drudgery.

Holiday Office Hours

In observance of our upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays, the church office will be closed Tuesday, December 24 through Wednesday, January 1. The office will reopen on Thursday, January 2, 2020.

New Year’s Day Parking

If you would like to enjoy the 131st Rose Parade, we have a limited number of free parking passes available at the Connections Desk that you can use in our Holly St garage on Rose Bowl Parade day.

Footnotes | Feasting

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’

“The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’

“‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”

Christmas: A Candid History
By Bruce David Forbes

FBCP Families | 50

Hi, Friends!

This morning we rehearsed for the Candlelight Carol Service, and let me tell you that tomorrow night's service is going to be FANTASTIC! Please bring friends and loved ones and join us as we settle into the story of Christmas and enjoy singing, lights, and reflections on the season. As a reminder, the service starts at 6PM. You'll get a preview during our regular worship service tomorrow morning. We can't wait!

Nursery - Elementary

This Sunday our nursery kids will continue to tell the story of Jesus' birth by reading about the animals and shepherds that came to see the baby Jesus. It will be so fun (and so cute!) to think about all of creation participating in the glorious birth of Christ!

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Why does it matter that there were animals who came to see the baby Jesus?

  • Why do you think God chose shepherds to be part of the birth story of Christ?

  • What is most surprising about the story this week?

Prayer:  God, thank you for inviting all people and creatures into your story! Help us to include those who are not always included.

Children's Choir

Parents, we had a great rehearsal today, so here are a few updates about the schedule for tomorrow!  We are asking kids to arrive at 9:45AM on Sunday morning for another short rehearsal, and they will be singing "Do You Hear What I Hear" during our morning worship service as a preview to the evening Candlelight Carol Service. They can come back at 5:45PM Sunday night, and we will provide some finger foods for dinner and prepare for the service that starts at 6PM. (Note that change—we no longer need them as early as 5PM because they did so well rehearsing today! We think 5:45PM is early enough.) You can encourage your child to practice using this lyric sheet and this video

Youth

This week the youth will gather for our regular youth time of lunch, discussion, and games. We will also help prepare some other things for the carol service!

Fuller Youth Institute Cohort

Get excited! We have been accepted to a two-year cohort project with other churches and the Fuller Youth Institute. The goal of the project is to design new and relevant ways to disciple youth, and I am so excited for this opportunity to innovate and grow our youth program in the context of solid research and other like-minded folks. Stay tuned for more information, and let me know if you are interested in being part of the work!

Youth Winter Retreat

This winter we are joining up with two other church youth groups for a fun and meaningful weekend retreat! All middle and high schoolers are invited to attend our winter retreat January 18th-20th at Camp Sky Meadows near Big Bear Lake. Stay tuned for more details, and get excited for a super fun time up in the mountains!

A Word on Joy

This Sunday we will light the advent candle of Joy during service. I found a great post about Joy on SALT's most recent commentary on this week of Advent. I want to share this gem from that with you since they quote Henri Nouwen, one of my favorite thinkers.

"...is it really possible to be joyful in the midst of the shadows of sorrow?  Henri Nouwen puts it this way: while happiness usually depends on circumstances, joy runs deeper.  'Joy,' he writes, 'is the experience of knowing that you are unconditionally loved and that nothing - sickness, failure, emotional distress, oppression, war, or even death - can take that love away.' Thus joy and sorrow can not only coexist; joy can even be found in the midst of sorrowful circumstances."

Know that you are loved unconditionally by God and that we as a church are always seeking to share unconditional love with one another. You give me great joy, indeed!

So thankful for you,

Lindsay Dorman | Family Pastor

Stop! First things first…

IMG_1468.GIF

Tomorrow evening is the Candlelight Carol Service! 77th time FBCP has presenting one of these, so that is a pretty big deal. 6pm tomorrow night. There will be so much fun and lovely stuff to share together, plus cookies afterwards for all who want to hang out and share some hugs and high fives. Okay, on to the rest of the news…

It is week #50. We need to talk about food…

This week I have been obsessed with a theology of feasting. Which means I have been not only eating some great food, but trying my best in real time to notice that I am eating some great food. Since I (along with most modern people) have the attention span of a Twinkie, this has been an important exercise. During Advent, we are focusing each week on one of the symbols/practices/traditions or the holiday season. We have talked about greenery and gifts. Next is feasting, and last is lights. Without spoiling the Sunday teaching, let’s just say that our practices of eating might be some of the most crucial but disordered ways we enact our belief. So grab a spoon, the biggest you can find, and take your seat at the table. The meal is about to be served. Speaking of meals, here are some places in Pasadena you can find amazing food kindly prepared…

Maquina Taco

True Food Kitchen

Amara Chocolate and Coffee

Ramen Tatsunoya

Bhanu Indian Cuisine and Market

Sunday Worship (Boiler is still working)

This Sunday morning we will be exploring feasting and fasting, and I will rant about dieting. Scripture is Luke 15, the story of the Prodigal and that yummy fattened calf. So come hungry, spiritually speaking of course. Please eat breakfast before arriving, otherwise you will be distracted the entire time we talk about feasting.

Friends In Deed Christmas Gift Drive

Gifts were delivered to Friends in Deed this week. We will write up a separate post about the experience and share soon. Short version: y’all were beyond generous and FBCP gifts made up a third of all gifts Friends in Deed received from all partner organizations combined. Of course it is not a competition(!), this simply shows your generosity is overflowing expectations. So proud of FBCP.

Carol Candlelight Service

This is a can’t miss service. An invite your best friend service. Maybe even invite your best enemy service, because the joy might just make you friends in the end. Just make sure you are there. You can learn more about the event below. There will be many familiar moments and some fun surprises, too. Expect banjos and handbells, among other delights. Bring a friend, bring some cookies to share at the reception afterwards, and bring the joy! Sunday at 6pm (for those of you who don’t scroll to the bottom).

Becoming Benedictions | Homeless Memorial

This year I was able to once again join the an interfaith leadership group in partnership with All Saints Pasadena for a memorial service for those who died in the last year while experiencing homelessness. I offered the opening reflection, which I wanted to share with you all here. Funerals and memorial services are some fo my favorite pastoral moments, because in those moments the deepest truths of my belief are enfleshed. Language is forced to its limit, as responsible pastors work hard to avoid clichés and easy answers. Here is my attempt at stretching language for a complex task.

Homeless Memorial Reflection by Pastor John Jay

Our brothers and sisters who live without permanent shelter experience life close to the bone. That is, they have the tragic privilege of being well acquainted with suffering, even unto death. What does it mean to have lived one’s existence within eyesight and earshot of death? Humans used to reckon with mortality as regularly as we reckon with the weather. There was no hiding it, no covering it over with Hallmark cards and embalming makeup.

This ancient familiarity bred within humanity a desire, acutely felt, to build a world of meaning around death. The universality of death became a way to understand all humans on equal footing.

Death humbled.

Naked we come into this realm, naked we leave it.

Dust to dust.

But not so anymore. The process of dying is itself reimagined as another plane of difference, distinction between people rather than joiner of peoples. Death sanitized or hidden. Death denied. Death polished until it reveals an inverted kind of privilege.

This evening we resist the modern urge to treat death as another dividing line between people. We join together across traditions to hold in sacred trust the crossing over from life to death. This is a passage humans have minded throughout history, and we do so again tonight.

Each of us has a way of speaking about  the pain and hope associated with dying. It is usually with some version of the phrase, “Our friend has died, and yet…”

And yet…

Which leads us again to hunger and thirst for meaning. Tonight we insist that the dignity and scared worth of our brothers and sisters be instantiated and sustained in our collective speech and silence. That we would hold open the space for meaning to emerge in ways congruent with the best versions of our scared stories. And that at least for a moment, we would again belong to one another.

On 12/8 I shared a teaching on the tradition of gift giving during Advent and Christmas. Here are some materials I found helpful in my process.

The Singing Bowl
By Malcolm Guite
Begin the song exactly where you are,
Remain within the world of which you’re made.
Call nothing common in the earth or air,

Accept it all and let it be for good.
Start with the very breath you breathe in now,
This moment’s pulse, this rhythm in your blood

And listen to it, ringing soft and low.
Stay with the music, words will come in time.
Slow down your breathing. Keep it deep and slow.

Become an open singing-bowl, whose chime
Is richness rising out of emptiness,
And timelessness resounding into time.

And when the heart is full of quietness
Begin the song exactly where you are.
— Malcolm Guite, "Singing Bowl"
No one can celebrate a genuine Christmas without being truly poor. The self-sufficient, the proud, those who, because they have everything, look down on others, those who have no need even of God—for them there will be no Christmas. Only the poor, the hungry, those who need someone to come on their behalf, will have that someone. That someone is God, Emmanuel, God-with-us. Without poverty of spirit, there can be no abundance of God.
— Oscar Romero

Hi Friends,

Gavin and I cannot fully express our joy and gratitude for you and the beautiful family we have at FBCP. Brody's dedication was particularly special and exciting for us; we are so thankful that he will grow and learn about God by spending time with you. Thank you for the promises you made to him as a congregation. We love and appreciate you dearly!

Last night Tasha, Gavin, and I had a blast with our youth at our annual Christmas party. In preparation for John Jay's teaching on the meaning of gift-giving tomorrow, we had the youth participate in a gift-giving team challenge, and they excelled (of course!). We have such a special group of young people at our church. They are a gift to our congregation!

Nursery - Elementary

This Sunday our nursery kids will begin to tell the story of Jesus' birth by reading the story of when the angel visits Mary. We can't wait to relive this part of the story in all of its surprise and mystery as kids think about the way God sends messages, uses everyday people, and invites us into a story greater than our imagination.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • How do you think Mary felt when she heard the news from the angel?

  • What does this story tell you about how God sees ordinary people?

  • What surprised you most in this story?

  • What can we learn from Mary?

Prayer:  God, help us to respond to you with an open heart like Mary!

Children's Choir

Parents, make sure you note some important times for children's choir happenings next weekend! On Saturday, December 14th, kids in TK and above will have a rehearsal from 10AM-12PM at church. We will provide snacks! Then on Sunday, December 15th, we are asking kids to arrive at 9:45AM for a rehearsal, and they will be singing "Do You Hear What I Hear" during our morning worship service as a preview to the evening Candlelight Carol Service. They can come back at 5PM, and we will provide some finger foods for dinner and prepare for the service that starts at 6PM. You can encourage your child to practice using this lyric sheet and this video

Youth

This week the youth will gather for our regular youth time of lunch, discussion, and games. We will also keep preparing for our role in the Candlelight Carol Service. So excited to share the season with the youth!

One Word Your Kids (and all of us!) Need to Hear More

I'm stealing a little habit from Kara Powell at the Fuller Youth Institute, and I thought you might want to use it with your children and loved ones. Powell shares her family practice in this short post: "Emmanuel. 'The God who is with us.' This phrase is one of our family’s favorite theological mantras to remind our teenagers of God’s grace, peace, and strength. When they are walking into a tough game, test, or complex situation, we often leave them with one last word: Emmanuel." What a beautiful way to remind each other that God is truly with us! I love all that is wrapped up in that one word. May it be a gift to you as you walk into any situation. Emmanuel...Emmanuel. Amen!

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Wonderful Weekly | 49

It is week #49. Last few weeks of 2019, first full week of the liturgical calendar.

Advent marks the season of beginning for the Church Year, which is a little strange since December marks the end of our regular time-keeping. This sets up a useful dissonance where we are asked to consider how time is arranged, entered, and ultimately redeemed. Speaking of time, here are some things happening within this Advent season…

Sunday Worship (Boiler is working again!!!)

This Sunday morning we will be exploring the sacred meaning of gift-giving (and receiving). This practice is common to many cultures during the midwinter season, and Christianity adopted this tradition, linking it with both the Magi and with God’s gift of presence in Jesus the Christ. (And we will all have the gift of warmth since our boiler is working!)

Friends In Deed Christmas Gift Drive

Hey friends, if you signed up to share a gift, then this Sunday please bring it to worship. Please leave all gifts unwrapped and attach a tag with the child’s name on it. You can drop it off at the Connections Desk in the Lobby before worship. We will have a special time of blessing in the service for the gifts and those who will receive them.

Carol Candlelight Service

Or is it Candlelight Carol Service? Or Carol-light Candle Service? Or Christmas Fun Time Wow? Either way, make sure you are there. You can learn more about the event below. Suffice it to say, there will be many familiar moments and some fun surprises, too. Expect banjos and handbells, among other delights. Bring a friend, bring some cookies to share at the reception afterwards, and bring the joy!

Homeless Memorial Service (FBCP+All Saints)

Mike Kinman, the Head Rector at All Saints, is a good friend of mine. Last year he invited our church to participate in the annual Memorial Service for those who died while experiencing homelessness. This kind of worship service is deeply meaningful, and it was an honor to stand on the chancel with other faith leaders. This year I will be back at the service offering the opening reflection. All are invited to attend. All Saints is right across the street from City Hall in the other direction from us. Learn more about the service below in our events section.

Footnotes | Advent

Advent is the season that precedes Christmas, where we celebrate the central claim that God took on humanity and dwelt among us. This season is marked by two conflicting realities. Advent is a patient season, where we recognize that many of us are waiting for God to show up in a decisive way. Yet holidays can also be a season for hurry and anxiety for many of us. Holiday time is fractured time. Here at FBCP, we want to settle into that first understanding of time, where God invites us to wait with the rest of creation for the renewal of all things. That is why Advent coincides with the winter season, with long nights and fallow ground. So we invite you to experience a different kind of time this holiday season, where the hurry of this world is subsumed by the patience of God.

Wonderful Weekly | 48

It is week #48. Time for updates.

This is the first Sunday of the Liturgical Calendar, which is a fancy way for talking about how time is marked according to the life of Jesus in an annual cycle. The Church calendar begins at Advent covering the four Sundays before Christmas Day. So this Sunday we will begin. Each Advent worship service is special, and this season we will also explore the core symbols of Advent/Christmas: greenery, gifts, feasting and lights.

Sunday Worship (Dress Warm)

This Sunday morning we will be exploring the sacred meaning of greenery, particularly the cultural practice of bringing trees and garland indoors during the dark and cold weeks of each winter. We will also have communion and everyone in worship for all-church Sunday. Plus a special bonus: Brody Dorman is being dedicated! So exciting, and such a great way to start Advent. And for real, bring a coat or a blanket. Pasadena was visited by the winter chill and our building can only do so much with its thermal mass. Also, our boiler is being repaired so the air is slightly less temperate. Just think of it as an Advent miracle. Because no one wants to come to church in December in a tank top (except maybe your pastor!)

New Advent Designs

Corrie, our resident Creative Director, has created a set of banners and bookmarksfor this Advent season. Check them out this Sunday on your way into worship. The large banner is an attempt to capture the hectic nature of the holidays through a ton of spilled Christmas stuff, offset by an invitation to find shelter in the liturgical rhythms of Advent worship. The side banners are simple but beautiful. All paintings, photographs and lettering are done in house, which I find brilliant. We also have an Advent bookmark that explains the season and has the entire worship schedule on it. This is a great way to invite a friend to worship during Advent. Just slide them a bookmark and wait for the magic to happen. Actually, you might need to do more than that, but the bookmark is a great start. So grab a few extras on Sunday and share with your closest friends (and your enemies too).

Friends In Deed Christmas Gift Drive

Hey friends, it’s time again for Friends in Deed’s annual Christmas gift drive! As a church we want to bless 80 families with gifts this Christmas. We need help with crafting gift tags this coming week. If you’re interested, please contact Pastor Gretchen.

Carol Candlelight Service

Or is it Candlelight Carol Service? Or Carol-light Candle Service? Or Christmas Fun Time Wow? Either way, make sure you are there. You can learn more about the event below. Suffice it to say, there will be many familiar moments and some fun surprises too. Expect banjos and handle bells, among other delights.

Bonus surprise

Baby Liv Pope is here! Kate and Taylor welcomed baby Liv into the world on November 29 at Huntington. All is well and everyone is healthy. Keep your eyes open for a meal train for those who want to drop some food off in the coming weeks.

Hi Friends,

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We just got back from Sacramento visiting my family and friends (Brody's first trip there!) . He is so excited to be back and can't wait for his baby dedication tomorrow. What a special church family he gets to belong to—we are so thankful for you!

Speaking of church family, I am so happy to share that Liv Taylor Pope arrived yesterday and is absolutely beautiful! Kate and Taylor are doing well and are so excited to welcome their precious baby girl to the world. We can't wait for her to meet her church!

If you didn't get to take home the Advent placemats and table tents last Sunday, we will have more out tomorrow. If you're still wondering what Advent is, it is the season of expectation leading up to Christmas. We hope everyone can enjoy this special time of year by slowing down and reflecting with loved ones, and those materials are a great way to do just that.

Oh, one more thing! Make sure you dress warmly tomorrow for worship as we wait on our heater to get a tune up.

Nursery - Elementary:

This Sunday our nursery kids will learn about a Ruler from Bethlehem in Micah 5:2-5. Kids who are in TK or older can join us in the sanctuary for worship because it's the first Sunday of the month! We love to have kids with us as we worship and pursue God together. Tomorrow's teaching will be the first in our Advent series, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Do you have any special traditions with hanging greens or putting up a tree?

  • What can we learn or remember about God when we see Christmas trees and wreaths?

  • What do you hope to think about and thank God for as we prepare for Christmas day?

Prayer:  God, help us to slow down and appreciate this season of Advent! Use us to bring new life to places that have withered.

Children's Choir

The kids are continuing to prepare to sing in December! They will perform at our 77th annual evening  Carol Service on December 15th, and we will have a dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 14th. More details to come, but mark your calendars for this special event! You can encourage your child to practice using this lyric sheet and this video

Youth:

This week the youth will gather for our regular youth time of lunch, discussion, and games. We will also begin preparing for our role in the Candlelight Carol Service. We are so excited to share the season with the youth!

Youth Christmas Party!

Our annual Youth Christmas Party is on Friday, December 6th! More details to come, but make sure you mark your calendars for that evening. We will start at 6PM and dinner is included along with Christmas festivities. Friends are welcome! Youth can RSVP for the party here. Yay!

News You Can Use

I recommend taking a minute to read "Remembering That It Happened Once" by Wendell Berry. It's about the Christmas story and is a beautiful way to begin the season of Advent. My favorite line is this: "we/ Ourselves are living in the world/ It happened in when it first happened." The "it" refers to the birth of Christ. So good!

Have a blessed weekend, and I hope to see you Sunday morning!

So thankful for you,

Lindsay Dorman

FBCP Families | 47

Hi, Friends!

During worship last week, John Jay reminded us that when we feel overwhelmed by all the problems we see in the world, we are called to be faithful in doing the next right thing. After worship, the youth had the opportunity to do so with the backpacks they assembled the previous week. Pastor Gretchen connected us with a church that sends folks to pass out lunches in Memorial and Central Parks every Sunday, so we teamed up with them. It was a meaningful experience for the youth to get out in their own city and offer some practical help to our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness. We will continue our manna bag practice and look forward to inviting the congregation into it whenever we do. As the weather gets colder, let's keep praying for those who need a safe and warm place to live and for ways we can engage in fair housing initiatives. (Stay tuned, too, for information about getting plugged into the Homeless Count in January!)

Last night we hosted a kid and youth party so parents could have a night out, and it was a blast! Many thanks to Michael Mann (who designed a scavenger hunt for our youth!), Engry Lopez, Mary Nobles, Callie Cuff, and Paula Matei for loving on our kids and helping us make pizzas and Thanksgiving crafts. Pastor Mary and I were so grateful for the chance to hang out with our fabulous kids and volunteers!

Get excited for this Sunday! We will be passing out Advent materials for your family and then staying after worship to decorate the church and eat lunch together. I hope to see you there!

Nursery - Elementary:

This Sunday our nursery kids will learn about Queen Esther and her example of caring leadership. She also reminds us how much God cares for us! The elementary kids will be learning about the plagues in the book of Exodus, which is also a story about God's care and provision (in a crazy way!). We look forward to a packed morning with our growing volunteer team and our kids!

Family Discussion Starters:

  • What can we learn about leadership from the examples of Esther and Moses?

  • When is a time God was with you in a difficult circumstance?

  • What are some ways we can we pray for freedom in our own city?

  • What surprises you most about God in the story?

Prayer:  God, thank you for caring for us. Help us to care for others and share your promises of freedom!

Children's Choir — Mark Your Calendars!

Youth:

This week the youth will join the tradition and help us decorate the church! We will eat lunch and get in the Christmas spirit as we hang the greens and lights. You are all invited to join the fun!

Yay!

Tapping Into Gratitude

The Fuller Youth Institute publishes posts regularly, and this week's caught my eye. If you are looking for some practical ways to make thankfulness part of your family's rhythm, check out this post. It has links to even more good stuff that is worth looking at (reclaiming this season with gratitude, finding enough in a culture of scarcity, and daily examen prayer).

And if you are looking for a beautiful theology of Thanksgiving and a way to see its place in both our history and today, check out the lovely read by SALT. You could even read it at the table on Thursday!

Have a blessed weekend, and I hope to see you Sunday morning!

So thankful for you,

Pastor Lindsay

Wonderful Weekly | 47

It is week #47. Time for updates.

Before we launch into the rest of the news, I want to encourage you all to make Advent worship a regular part of your December calendar. It is a special time in the life of our church, but it is also a prelude to a central part of the scriptures (incarnation). This Sunday we will also have made a cute little bookmark with the Advent gatherings on it. Grab a few extra and invite a friend to experience this season of worship with us. I can’t wait to share what we have been planning behind the scenes.

A few weeks back we did a couple of family dedications. This is one of my favorite pictures from the day.

A few weeks back we did a couple of family dedications. This is one of my favorite pictures from the day.

Sunday Worship

This Sunday morning we will be exploring eschatology. Y’all, this is the last teaching on my ordination essays. Fittingly, we are ending with an exploration of endings in the Christian tradition. We will tie a lot of things together this week, while sufficiently frustrating all of those folks looking for a definitive statement about mysteries beyond our comprehension. Fair warning, I will be dropping some savage critique of those most popular fictional books from the Left Behind series. We will look at the Lord’s Prayer again while also revisiting Genesis/Exodus/Isaiah/Ezekiel/Romans/Hebrews/Revelation. So pretty much a regular Sunday at FBCP! Also on Sunday…

Hanging of the Greens (and other things)

Plan to stay around after worship to help us get the church building ready for Advent and Christmas. Corrie will have the to-do list. Pastor Lindsay will have the lunch food. We need a bunch of you all to lend a hand. Christmas music will be provided at no extra charge.

New Outdoor Banners

Corrie, our resident Creative Director, has created a set of banners for this Advent season. Check them out this Sunday on your way into worship. The large banner is an attempt to capture the hectic nature of the holidays through a ton of spilled Christmas stuff, offset by an invitation to find shelter in the liturgical rhythms of Advent worship. The side banners are simple but beautiful. All paintings, photographs and lettering are done in house, which I find brilliant.

surviving holiday stress

The holidays can be a wonderful time to reconnect with family and friends. But for some of us, those times can be fraught with tension over differences that seem to get amplified in the midst of holiday stress. Join us as Dr. Ken Fong leads a discussion on how to cope with challenging family dynamics during the holidays. Child care is available upon request. The session will meet on the 2nd floor at the church building. Click here to register so we can make sure there is room for you.

Gratitude Night Recap

On November 17 we held our annual church business meeting known as Gratitude Night. Y’all really committed to the potluck, and those last minute egg rolls were the highlight of my plate. We voted to approve our 2020 budget as presented, as well as our new Board members and bylaws revision. To learn more about the proposals, you can click on the Town Hall link and see the provided documents. We also debuted our pledge cards, asking people to pray about how they will contribute to the ministry fund of 2020. We will be sharing the Intended Giving Cards with you all soon through snail mail along with some useful info about our yearly budget and long-range planning. Keep an eye on the mailbox.

Hi Friends,

Happy Friday! Thanks to those who were able to stay after worship last week and help the youth fill some bags with winter-friendly supplies. It was a beautiful picture of church to see all ages working together to serve our neighbors. This Sunday our high schoolers will distribute the bags with a ministry that provides lunch for folks in Memorial Park across the street. (Thanks to Pastor Gretchen for connecting us with them!) We appreciate your continued prayers and advocacy for our friends who need housing. Pray that the bags will meet practical needs and provide encouragement for the heart.

We have a lot going on as we head into Advent and Christmas, so make sure you don't miss out on any of the information below! And get SUPER excited for some beautiful Advent materials to take home—I can't wait to show you what we have been working on (and by "we" I mean lots of wonderful helping hands)!

Nursery - Elementary

This Sunday our nursery kids will learn about when Solomon builds the temple. The elementary kids will be learning about Moses and the burning bush. Both stories speak to the importance of responding to God's call and instructions. We can't wait for kids to think about the beauty of our own church building and the special ways that God calls us to help with kingdom work!

Family Discussion Starters:

  • Where do you go to feel close to God?

  • What gifts has God given you, and how might you be called to use those in the world for good?

  • How do you act when you are asked to do something you don't want to do? What can the story of Moses teach us about those moments?

Prayer:  God, help us to respond to your call and do the good work you created us to do!

Children's Choir — Mark Your Calendars!

Youth

Winter Manna Bags Distribution

This Sunday the high school youth will distribute the bags to folks at Memorial Park. They will leave worship a little early and lunch will be included as usual. All middle school youth will be with Grant and Grace (Yay!) for regular youth programming. They will also get to pray for the high schoolers, the bags, and those who are receiving them.

Youth Christmas Party!

Our annual Youth Christmas Party is on Friday, December 6th! More details to come, but make sure you mark your calendars for that evening. We will start at 6PM and dinner is included along with Christmas festivities. Yay!

Talking to Kids about Thanksgiving

The practice of giving thanks is critical to our health and ability to experience joy, and this time of year is a reminder of that. It's also a time when we celebrate a holiday that is rooted i a complicated history. If you are looking for resources on how to talk to your kids about the complexity of Thanksgiving, this article has some good insights and links to a ton of resources

Please RSVP for Parents Night Out!

Parents, this is for you! Mark your calendars for November 22nd from 5:30-9:00 PM. Mary and I are planning a night of fun for all kids, including the youth. The added bonus? Parents can have an evening to themselves!  We will provide programming, food, and fun for kids so that you can have a few hours to use as you wish (dinner out? a nap? a movie? Christmas shopping?). Kids can come for the full time or any fraction of it. It's a win-win for kids and adults (and for Mary and me)! Please RSVP with this link so we can plan for food and fun. Woot!

So thankful for you,

Happenings?!

This entire section of the site and communication is a little new, so a quick word on its function. We send out a weekly update email to those of you who have opted in to emails. (If you haven’t, you can do so at the end of this post.) And we loved the content and sharing. However, sometimes emails would slip through the cracks. And what about people who wanted to hear what was happening in our community but were just visiting the website? Plus a ton of our communication was directing you back to our main site for various reasons (teaching audio, giving info, etc). It made sense to bring these elements together in one place where the content could be accessed regardless of spam filters or the general black hole that is your inbox (for those of you with thousands of unread emails).

Think of this “HAPPENINGS” section of the website like a beloved junk drawer of wonderfulness. Each week you will encounter regular entries, like our FBCP FAMILIES, WONDERFUL WEEKLY and LAGNIAPPE posts. Those numbers after the title represent the week of the year (hence the 46 on this one). Other times we will highlight a cool thing that has happened or is about to happen. Like the Town Hall and Moral Mondays Vigil posts you can read right now.

Apparently you can use an RSS feed reader to alert you to new content automatically, and if you know what those words mean and how to do such a thing, please email me and let’s get coffee so I can learn!

Last thing I will mention at this time. In each of these posts you will find a set of staff pictures that move (GIFs). Those staff members are the ones playing a role in the content you see in the post. So for this one, you can see the ministers (worship leadership) and Corrie (advent art). This is just a little bonus tidbit. We love bonus tidbits.

Sunday Worship

This Sunday morning we will be exploring a theology of social responsibility. This is a sticky topic for some strange reason, given how important practical ethics were to Jesus. Take Matthew 23 and 25 as examples. Take Amos 5 for instance. So this week we are going to do something a little different. Rather than a classic monologue teaching, we are going to model improvisational ethics together in worship. So in place of the regular teaching, there will be an AMA (ask me anything) with Pastors Lindsay and John Jay responding to your questions. Is there an ethical quandary you have been wrestling with for years? Bring it to worship. Have you ever wondered how to interpret the morally ambiguous sections of the Bible? Of course you have! Come share a dialogue with us on Sunday. Worship is at 10:30am. Speaking of Sunday…

Gratitude Night & Potluck

On November 17 we will host our annual church meeting affectionately known as Gratitude Night. The Board collaborates with the staff on the event, and we use the time to celebrate where we have been in the last year and prepare for the next season of life at FBCP. We will vote on the 2020 budget and new Board candidates. Gratitude Night is potluck style, so prepare a dish to share. Just a reminder that voting is limited to active members. If you are unsure of your membership status, you can contact us and we will let you know. If you would like to become a member, then for sure contact us!

Two weeks before Gratitude Night we hold a Town Hall. We have synthesized the Town Hall for those who could not attend. You can find that info here.

For other events that are coming up, check out the links below. See you Sunday!

Footnotes | A Teaching on Humanity

Tia-mat cried aloud and fiercely,
All her lower members trembled beneath her.
She was reciting an incantation, kept reciting her spell,
While the (battle-)gods were sharpening their weapons of war.
Tia-mat and Marduk, the sage of the gods, came together,
Joining in strife, drawing near to battle.
Be-l spread out his net and enmeshed her;
He let loose the Evil Wind, the rear guard, in her face.
Tia-mat opened her mouth to swallow it,
She let the Evil Wind in so that she could not close her lips.
The fierce winds weighed down her belly,
Her inwards were distended and she opened her mouth wide.
He let fly an arrow and pierced her belly,
He tore open her entrails and slit her inwards,
He bound her and extinguished her life,
He threw down her corpse and stood on it.

Hi, FBCP Family!

What a beautiful Sunday we had last week—two baby dedications, a time of remembrance for our loved ones, and a teaching on the church wrapped around it all. Thank you for being a community that loves well and commits to keep loving one another as our church family grows through seasons of life together. I am so proud to belong to you! As we head into the holiday season, make sure you mark your calendars for the following events. Don't forget to invite some friends to join!

Nursery - Elementary

This Sunday our nursery kids will learn about David and the way God makes each of us special and knows us by name. The elementary kids will be learning about baby Moses and the ways God takes care of us through the people in our lives and our circumstances—even a basket floating in the water! It will be a joyful morning full of reminders that God loves us and takes care of us.

Family Discussion Starters:

  • What questions do you have about the story of Moses or David?

  • What was your favorite part of the story and why?

  • God made you and knows you! What are some ways He made you special?

  • How might God want to use you to love others in your home, school, or neighborhood?

Prayer: God, help us to love others and take care of them as we trust you to love and take care of us.

Children's Choir — Mark Your Calendars!

The kids are working hard in preparation for their chance to lead the church in song this Christmas! They will perform at our 77th Annual Candlelight Carol Service on the evening of December 15th, and we will have a dress rehearsal on Saturday, December 14th. More details to come, but mark your calendars for this special event! You can encourage your child to practice using this lyric sheet and this video.

Youth

Winter Manna Bags

This Sunday the youth will help facilitate a winter manna bag packing party, and everyone in the church is invited! What is a winter manna bag? They are backpacks filled with items that are needed in the cold weather. Mark Norwood, our faithful building attendant and friend, initially had the idea to pack these bags for those experiencing homelessness as the cold season approaches. We are so glad he did! This Sunday the youth will gather before worship to set up the supplies in the courtyard, and after worship they will help guide the church in assembling the bags. Pizza lunch is included for all who want to join! Next week the youth will distribute the bags to those in need. We hope you will come hang out with the youth, pack some bags, and bless our Pasadena neighbors in this small but practical way.

Youth Christmas Party

Our annual Youth Christmas Party is on Friday, December 6th! We will start at 6PM and dinner is included along with Christmas festivities. More details to come, but make sure you mark your calendars for that evening. Yay!

Youth Winter Retreat

This winter we are joining up with two other church youth groups for a fun and meaningful winter retreat the weekend of January 18-19! All middle and high schoolers are invited to attend. We will leave that Saturday morning and come back Sunday afternoon. The location is Camp Sky Meadows near Big Bear Lake, so pray for enough snow to go sledding! S'mores, games, and a deep dive into what it means to love ourselves and our world well are all part of the plan. (Plus, Pastor Mary offered to bake us cookies!) Stay tuned for more details, and get excited for a super fun time up in the mountains!

Prayer Requests

Mary and I would love to pray for you! We know that adults have the opportunity to submit prayers during service, but we also want to make spaces for parents and kids to bring their requests to us each week. One of those ways is through this online form that you can complete at anytime during the week. We honor your willingness to share and your confidentiality, and we are SO privileged to pray for your families. Have a blessed weekend, and I hope to see you Sunday morning!

So thankful for you,

Wonderful Weekly | 45

Hey friends, it's update time.

Did you know Advent is just around the corner?! We are VERY aware of this fact, so a ton of our behind the scenes planning has thrown us fully into holiday mode. We are excited to share more soon. Be thinking about who you might invite to worship over the Advent and Christmas season. Don't worry; we will be giving out some lovely print material for you to share with all of the info on it. And as always, the designs will be hand-made-in-house by Corrie and crew.

This Sunday morning we will be exploring a theology of humanity. Of what are we made? What does it mean to be made in the image of God? How does Babylon relate to Genesis 1? Also, a big part of the teaching will be congregational participation, so get ready! So much to share. So much to learn. I can't wait.

On November 17 we will host our annual church meeting affectionately known as Gratitude Night. The Board collaborates with the staff on the event, and we use the time to celebrate where we have been in the last year and prepare for the next season of life at FBCP. We will vote on the 202 budget and new Board candidates. The dinner is potluck style, so prepare a dish to share. Two weeks before Gratitude Night we hold a Town Hall. Becoming Benedictions: Moral Mondays and City Council Meetings

My Document (1).jpg

A note from Pastor Gretchen…

Cynthia and I have been working together in the partnership with GPAHG, and had signed up to lead the Moral Monday prayer vigil, held in support of making more affordable supportive housing available, on November 4th. That was in place when it became clear the City wanted to present and pass the Tenant Protection Act of 2019, which added a lot more excitement to an already important agenda.

There are so many people in Pasadena who want to see people find housing that works for them. It’s hard to know what to do, though. There are great organizations who have been working toward these issues for years, like GPAHG, Everyone In (United Way), and Union Station Homeless Services. It’s been great to get to know these groups and to see the partnerships they have formed in order to strengthen the work each group does.

I ran into a friend of mine, PJ, at this rally and meeting. I had last seen her a few months ago at a similar city council meeting, where she passionately spoke about her and her neighbors getting unfairly evicted from their apartments. She’s become part of the Washington 16, and has stood alongside others also facing unfair evictions. She and others gave witness to their struggles on Monday, and highlighted ways in which the proposed Tenant Protection Act (it was passed into law Tuesday morning) was good but still lacked provisions for evicted tenants. While there is a good law on the books, there are still needs for help for tenants fighting landlords who are trying to get them out of their property. Hearing PJ speak reminded me of just how much more needs to be done, and the importance of including all voices – those writing the laws, those who are most directly affected by the laws and are living in the reality, and those who want to help out – in the mix of figuring out solutions.

PJ and I are friends through our studies at Fuller. She loves creation, loves God and cares for her teenage son as a single mother. She saw me at this meeting and came up to me to express both gratitude that I was there, and anger/frustration/disappointment that there weren’t other Fuller students at the meeting advocating for changes. I’m sure there are reasons for that, but it made me aware of how much my presence – as a friend, as a faith leader, as someone who’s just concerned – and actions at events like this and even in the day-to-day can mean, how it speaks to my commitments and concerns as a follower of Jesus to those who know me. That’s true of any of us; presence can go a long way to helping people know the reality of God coming alongside of them and His care for them in the midst of their circumstances even if we’re unable to do much more than that.

Thank you all for your continued support and prayers for issues like these. In the prayer we led on Monday, we asked that Pasadena reflect God’s love, rule and reign. Let’s continue to pray that everybody in Pasadena will find hope, healing, health and ways to thrive, and that God will use us to help that happen.

Gretchen

Town Hall recap

On November 3, 2019 we gathered for our annual Town Hall meeting. We know many of you would have loved to attend but were unable to make it for various reasons. So we decided to share the relevant info here! Below you will find links to our proposed 2020 Ministry Budget and other goodies. At Town Hall we also presented our candidates for the Deacon Body and a Bylaws amendment. Ready? Let’s do it!

Budget

The Budget was presented by Blake Horridge, our current Deacon Treasurer. It takes a couple of months to create our yearly budget.* A huge thanks to our Finance Team and Deacon Board for their hard work to get us to this point. You will notice that we are budgeting a deficit for next year, so let me offer some background on how we arrived at this point. Our general offerings are slightly lower than last year, which is a trend we have been watching for the last couple of quarters (three month blocks). We projected lower general offering contributions for 2020, which also meant we tightened up our expenses as much as we could without lowering our ministry capacity. Budgeting a deficit is a short term reality for FBC Pasadena, because we will have some big positive shifts to our revenue stream in the next couple of years. We have healthy cash reserves to absorb any imbalance in the short term as well. Plus we have no debt! Even with all of this, we are looking at a deficit of only $53,000 for next year’s budget. Zach Hoover, our Board Moderator, challenged us at Town Hall to step up our giving for 2020 as a way to close this gap. The Deacon Board have together committed to digging deeper in 2020 to help us flourish as a church. It was a beautiful commitment to generosity, and combined the Board members will be raising their giving by $350/month.

We are continuing to build our revenue streams by expanding our building use, and 2020 will see several new building partnerships. These will be closely aligned with our vision of being a blessing to our city and world. All of these efforts will allow us to expand our ministries while our current and newer members step into expansive generous practices. We think a lot about growth at FBCP, but intend that growth to be sustainable and deep. So we are in the stages of putting down good foundational roots. This is the most important growth of all. From there we believe that any other growth can scale without unraveling our core convictions. Speaking of core convictions…

Bylaw Proposal

We also presented a Bylaws amendment for consideration. We will formally vote on this amendment at Gratitude Night on November 17, 2019. The Board refined the language around membership to more accurately reflect our values and practice as a church. Prior to 2013 (the last major revision to the Bylaws), there were several paths into membership, including the recognition of the unique baptismal and conversion experiences of each person. FBCP has always had a normative path to membership, and that will continue into the future. The baptist distinctive of immersive baptism after a profession of faith will still be our internal practice moving forward. This amendment will once again allow us to welcome people to membership who have been baptized in another Christian community.

Here is the language we are proposing:

The membership of the church shall consist of persons who have professed their faith that Jesus is Lord, have been baptized, participated in the class for membership and signed the church covenant. (Article II, Section 1)

Here is the 2013 language being replaced:

The membership of the church shall consist of persons who have professed faith in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord, have been baptized as believers by immersion, participated in the class for membership and signed the church covenant. (Article II, Section 1)

Board Candidates

One last thing you missed was a discussion about our candidates for Deacon Board leadership. We have a seven person Board of Deacons. There are four officer positions, and three at large members. The Officer positions are Moderator, Vice Moderator, Treasurer and Clerk. Deacons serve two year terms, and can serve three concurrent terms before they have to take a year of sabbatical before being eligible again. This year we have three deacons terming out, so we are recommending three new candidates for service. Here are the short info statements from each candidate…

Angel Cheng

As we are discovering what it means to be a safe place for people to come as they are without pretense and find the open embrace of Jesus welcoming them home, I believe that what I've learned from seminary and the rooms of recovery about becoming sacred safe spaces of authenticity and grace can be of service to FBC in this season of formation.

Brian Young

I have attended the church with my wife Jen since November 2011. I have served by organizing the young professionals small group, running and building worship slides, and performing various consultations around the church. I also serve on the board for the First Baptist Church Foundation. I work as a navigation engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and just welcomed my son, Elliot, into the world on October 17.

Jason Ellis

I am married to Natalee, and we have sons Asher (9) and Bennett (5). We’ve been going to FBC for about a year and a half. We were immediately drawn to the warmth we felt from everyone on Sunday morning, the diversity, and the preaching. I work at Disney in Title Lifecycle Management, which is a fancy way of saying a project planner for their movies. We’re both California natives and have been in Pasadena post-college.

As you can see, a lot is happening around FBC Pasadena. Our annual business meeting will be on Gratitude Night on November 17 at 6:00pm. At that meeting we will vote on the above topics in the context of worship and celebration. We will also be reintroducing the historic practice of Promise Cards, where we will invite individuals and families to prayerfully pledge to a level of financial support for 2020. This will help us in many ways, and will also allow everyone to enter into their practice of stewardship with intentionality. All are welcome at Gratitude Night, but voting is limited to the membership of FBC Pasadena. If you would like further clarification on any of the above items, feel free to email our Deacon Board or Ministerial Staff using the buttons below.

*First, the ministry staff prepare recommendations for their various areas of focus, collaborating on a preliminary rough draft of possible changes. Those recommendations go to the finance team, who begin the process of balancing the budget. This is accomplished by analyzing income and expense trends, thereby creating run rates to estimates how we will finish year end. Our fiscal year is January-December. It usually takes 3-4 sessions to fully integrate all changes and finalize a budget. The Finance Team then passes their recommended budget draft to the Deacon Board for their notes and changes. They prepare a final budget draft to share with the larger membership, which is how we got to Town Hall.
