Affordable Housing on Religious Land

Friends at FBCP,

Some of our local partners have shared a way that we can advocate for more affordable housing opportunities. Ten churches in Pasadena have expressed interest in having affordable housing on their land, but the zoning is not right for most of them. On May 23rd, the Pasadena City Council will discuss a proposed zoning amendment for these churches.

The zoning necessary for affordable housing to be feasible involves a delicate balance of various factors, such as density. Making Housing and Community Happen (MHCH) has been studying this zoning proposal for several years and has concluded that the proposal coming before the City Council will not work for most church sites in the city. MHCH has submitted suggested changes for the proposal so that it will work.

Monday, May 23rd, will be the first of two or three City Council meetings at which the proposal will be discussed. We need the public, especially the churches, to write emails before 5 pm on Monday to the City Council supporting a zoning amendment that works to produce affordable housing. While we are not actively trying to redevelop our church property at this time, we want to support the option for churches in Pasadena to pursue that work if they desire. Thank you for partnering with MHCH to help bring this matter to the attention of our City Council.

See here for more details about the proposal.
