Liturgy for wherever you are

Eighth Sunday of Pentecost

July 24, 2022

welcome to WORSHIP

Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ.

HYMN sTUDies

We are in our preaching series on hymns that have been a part of our faith tradition over the years and formed us theologically as we have sung them in worship. Each week you’ll find the lyrics to the hymn being highlighted here for continued reflection.

I Want Jesus to Walk With Me

African American Spiritual

I want Jesus to walk with me
I want Jesus to walk with me
All along my pilgrim journey
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me

In my trials, Lord, walk with me
In my trials, Lord, walk with me
When the shades of life are failing
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me

In my sorrows, Lord, walk with me
In my sorrows, Lord, walk with me
When my heart within is aching
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me

I want Jesus to walk with me
I want Jesus to walk with me
All along my pilgrim journey
Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me

Lyrics*

Cornerstone

Edward Mote | Eric Liljero | Jonas Myrin | Reuben Morgan | William Batchelder Bradbury

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' name

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior's love
Through the storm
He is Lord
Lord of all

When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

God With Us

Jason Ingram | Leslie Jordan

Oh You've come to bring peace to be Love
To be nearer to us
You've come to bring life to be Light
To shine brighter in us
Oh Emmanuel God with us

Our Deliverer You are Savior
In Your presence we find our strength
Over ev'rything our Redemption
God with us
You are God with us

Oh You've come to be Hope to this world
For Your honor and name
And You've come to take sin to bear shame
And to conquer the grave
Oh Emmanuel God with us

You are here
You are holy
We are standing in Your glory (Lord)

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

Anthony Johnson Showalter | Elisha Albright Hoffman

What a fellowship, what a joy divine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
What a blessedness, what a peace is mine,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Leaning, leaning,
Safe and secure from all alarms;
Leaning, leaning,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

Oh, how sweet to walk in this pilgrim way,
Leaning on the everlasting arms;
Oh, how bright the path grows from day to day,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

What have I to dread, what have I to fear,
Leaning on the everlasting arms?
I have blessed peace with my Lord so near,
Leaning on the everlasting arms.

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Chip welcomed and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Angel led us in our call to worship. John Jay helped us welcome our guests. Chip led us in communal prayer. John read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching to feed our spirits and returned at the end to offer up the benediction. Dannie invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Hannah and Leslie provided the offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Astyn, Natalee, Jason E., and Chris T. Chip helped us to appreciate our volunteers of the month before he reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together. Leslie oversaw the production while Harriet worked her technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.

Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
