Liturgy for wherever you are
Ninth Sunday of Pentecost
July 31, 2022
welcome to WORSHIP
Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ.
HYMN sTUDies
We are in our preaching series on hymns that have been a part of our faith tradition over the years and formed us theologically as we have sung them in worship. Each week you’ll find the lyrics to the hymn being highlighted here for continued reflection.
Fontanelle
Clem Snide
May the sun always shine on you
And each day feel so bright and new
And may God hold you in the palm of His hand
May the moon always light your way
And love be forever and here to stay
And may God hold you in the palm of His hand
And may God hold you in the palm of His hand
When your time, you time has reached its end
Then may paradise be just around the bend
And if the world should turn its back to you
And it seems, seems there’s nothing left to do
Then may God hold you in the palm of His hand
Then may God hold you in the palm of His hand
Lyrics*
In Jesus’ Name
Darlene Zschech | Israel Houghton
God is fighting for us God is on our side
God has overcome yes
God has overcome
We will not be shaken we will not be moved
Jesus You are here
Carrying our burdens covering our shame
God has overcome yes
God has overcome
We will not be shaken we will not be moved
Jesus You are here
I will live I will not die
The resurrection pow'r of Christ
Alive in me and I am free
In Jesus' Name
I will live I will not die
I will declare and lift You high
Christ revealed and I am healed
In Jesus' Name
God is fighting for us pushing back the darkness
Lighting up the Kingdom that cannot be shaken
In the Name of Jesus enemy's defeated
And we will shout it out shout it out
All Creatures of Our God and King
Brent Milligan | David Crowder | St. Francis of Assisi | William Henry Draper
All creatures of our God and King
Lift up your voice and with us sing
O praise Him alleluia
Thou burning sun with golden beam
Thou silver moon with softer gleam
O praise Him O praise Him
Alleluia alleluia alleluia
Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heav'n along
O praise Him alleluia
Thou rising moon in praise rejoice
Ye lights of evening find a voice
O praise Him O praise Him
Alleluia alleluia alleluia
Let all things their Creator bless
And worship Him in humbleness
O praise Him alleluia
Praise praise the Father praise the Son
And praise the Spirit three in One
O praise Him O praise Him
Alleluia alleluia alleluia
Holy, Holy, Holy
John Bacchus Dykes | Reginald Heber
Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty
Early in the morning
Our song shall rise to Thee
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy!
Though the darkness hide thee
Though the eye of sinful ones
Thy glory may not see
Only Thou art holy
There is none beside Thee
Perfect in power, in love, and purity
Holy, holy, holy!
Lord God Almighty
All thy works shall praise Thy name
In earth and sky and sea
Holy, holy, holy!
Merciful and mighty
God in three persons
Blessed Trinity!
Doxology
Thomas Ken
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! John Jay welcomed and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Warren led us in our call to worship. Lindsay helped us to appreciate Corrie for her years of service on staff as our artist in residence. John Jay helped us to welcome our guests. Judy led us in communal prayer. Charles C. read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching to feed our spirits and returned at the end to offer up the benediction. Kathy O. invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Paul provided the offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Leslie, Warren, Cynthia, Rick, and Dann. Chip and Judah reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together. Leslie oversaw the production while Harriet worked her technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.
Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
