Liturgy for wherever you are

Tenth Sunday of Pentecost

August 7, 2022

welcome to WORSHIP

Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ.

HYMN sTUDies

We are in our preaching series on hymns that have been a part of our faith tradition over the years and formed us theologically as we have sung them in worship. For these next three weeks, we will be taking a look at Scripture passages that have served as hymns of praise and thanksgiving as well as core theological texts for us. This week’s passage is shown below. Unless noted otherwise, passages below are taken from the New Revised Standard Version.

John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.  The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

He was in the world, and the world came into being through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

Lyrics*

O For a Thousand (Hallelujah)

Carl Gotthelf Glaser | Charles Wesley | Ralph E. Hudson | Thomas Miller

O for a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise
The glories of my God and King
The triumphs of His grace

If eloquence I could display
And every language speak
A thousand words could never say
The praise I have for Thee

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
All praise to our God

Before the throne we'll sing a song
With saints from every age
With thousands times ten thousand strong
We'll praise His holy name

Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
All praise to our God
Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah
All praise to our King

A thousand years will be as one
When face to face I see
The splendid beauty of the Son
The One who died for me

Jesus Messiah

Chris Tomlin | Daniel Carson | Ed Cash | Jesse Reeves

He became sin who knew no sin
That we might become His righteousness
He humbled Himself and carried the cross
Love so amazing, love so amazing

Jesus Messiah, Name above all names
Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners
The ransom from heaven
Jesus Messiah Lord of all

His body the bread, His blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love
The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn
Love so amazing, love so amazing

All our hope is in You
All our hope is in You
All the glory to you God
The Light of the world

Your Glory/Nothing But the Blood

Leslie Jordan / Robert Lowry

My life is Yours
And my hope is in You only
And my heart You hold
'Cause You made this sinner holy
And holy holy

'Cause Your glory is so beautiful
I fall onto my knees in awe
And the heartbeat of my life
Is to worship in Your light
'Cause Your glory is so beautiful
'Cause Your glory is so beautiful

Glory glory hallelujah
Jesus You are good

What can wash away my sins
Nothing but the blood of Jesus
What can make me whole again
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Oh, precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow
No other fount I know
Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Doxology

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Lindsay welcomed and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Jennifer W. led us in our call to worship. Lindsay and Mary led us in a blessing for all our students and educators starting a new academic year this fall. Bunny led us in communal prayer. Taya read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching to feed our spirits and returned at the end to offer up the benediction. Chip led us in a time of communion. Jason E. invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Paul provided the offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Leslie, Jason C., Rick and Denise. John Jay reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together. Leslie oversaw the production while Harriet worked her technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.

Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
