Liturgy for wherever you are

Eleventh Sunday of Pentecost

August 14, 2022

welcome to WORSHIP

Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ.

HYMN sTUDies

We are in our preaching series on hymns that have been a part of our faith tradition over the years and formed us theologically as we have sung them in worship. Currently we are taking a look at Scripture passages that have served as hymns of praise and thanksgiving as well as core theological texts for us. This week’s passage is shown below. Unless noted otherwise, passages below are taken from the New Revised Standard Version.

Colossians 1:15-20

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Lyrics*

In Jesus’ Name

Darlene Zschech | Israel Houghton

God is fighting for us God is on our side
God has overcome yes
God has overcome
We will not be shaken we will not be moved
Jesus You are here

Carrying our burdens covering our shame
God has overcome yes
God has overcome
We will not be shaken we will not be moved
Jesus You are here

I will live I will not die
The resurrection pow'r of Christ
Alive in me and I am free
In Jesus' Name

I will live I will not die
I will declare and lift You high
Christ revealed and I am healed
In Jesus' Name

God is fighting for us pushing back the darkness
Lighting up the Kingdom that cannot be shaken
In the Name of Jesus enemy's defeated
And we will shout it out shout it out

What a Beautiful Name

Ben Fielding | Brooke Ligertwood

You were the Word at the beginning
One with God the Lord Most High
Your hidden glory in creation
Now revealed in You our Christ

What a beautiful Name it is
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a beautiful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a beautiful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

You didn’t want heaven without us
So Jesus You brought heaven down
My sin was great Your love was greater
What could separate us now

What a wonderful Name it is
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a wonderful Name it is
Nothing compares to this
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a wonderful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

Death could not hold You
The veil tore before You
You silence the boast of sin and grave
The heavens are roaring
The praise of Your glory
For You are raised to life again

You have no rival
You have no equal
Now and forever God You reign
Yours is the kingdom
Yours is the glory
Yours is the Name above all names

What a powerful Name it is
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus Christ my King
What a powerful Name it is
Nothing can stand against
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus
What a powerful Name it is
The Name of Jesus

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

Helen H. Lemmel

Turn your eyes upon Jesus
Look full in His wonderful face
And the things of earth
Will grow strangely dim
In the light of His glory and grace

Our Father

Marcus Meier

Our Father in Heaven
Hallowed be Your name
Your Kingdom come quickly
Your will be done the same

On Earth as it is in Heaven
Let Heaven come to
Earth as it is in Heaven
Let Heaven come

Let Heaven come, let Heaven come

Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the power
Yours is the glory forever, amen
Yours is the Kingdom, Yours is the power
Yours is the glory forever amen

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Saskia welcomed and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Tim led us in our call to worship. Lindsay and John Jay invited us to witness and celebrate the dedication of the Sanchez-Wilsey’s sons. Mady led us in communal prayer. Lisa I. read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching to feed our spirits, and he helped us recognize our American Baptist retired ministers and missionaries as he invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Paul provided the offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Leslie, Astyn, Warren, Rick, and Dann. Chip and Lindsay reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together before John Jay offered up the benediction. Leslie oversaw the production while Harriet worked her technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.

Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
