Liturgy for wherever you are

Twentieth Sunday of Pentecost

Genesis 16: The God Who Sees | October 15th, 2023

welcome to WORSHIP

Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ. Be Thou My Vision

Eleanor Henrietta Hull | Mary Elizabeth Byrne

Be Thou my vision O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father and I Thy true child
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven my treasure Thou art

High King of heaven my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys O bright heaven’s Sun
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my vision O ruler of all

Great are You, Lord

David Leonard | Jason Ingram | Leslie Jordan

You give life You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope You restore ev'ry heart that is broken
Great are You Lord

It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise
We pour out our praise
It's Your breath in our lungs
So we pour out our praise to You only

And all the earth will shout Your praise
Our hearts will cry these bones will sing
Great are You Lord

Kyrie Eleison

 Cindy Rethmeier | Ted Kim

For the things we’ve done and left undone
For the ways we’ve wandered from your heart
Forgive us we pray
Forgive us we pray

For the idols we put on Your throne
For the loves we choose above Your own
Forgive us we pray
Forgive us we pray

Lord have mercy
Christ have mercy
Lord have mercy on us on us

For the lies that we clutch to our chests
For the fear that wants to steal our breath
Forgive us we pray
And give us Your grace

Forgiving God forgiving us

Joy of the Lord

Chris Llewellyn | Ed Cash | Gareth Gilkeson

Though the tears may fall my song will rise
My song will rise to You
Though my heart may fail my song will rise
My song will rise to You
While there’s breath in my lungs
I will praise You Lord

In the dead of night I’ll lift my eyes
I’ll lift my eyes to You
When the waters rise I’ll lift my eyes
I’ll lift my eyes to You
While there’s hope in this heart
I will praise You Lord

The joy of the Lord is my strength
The joy of the Lord is my strength
In the darkness I’ll dance
In the shadows I’ll sing
The joy of the Lord is my strength

When I cannot see You with my eyes
Let faith arise to You
When I cannot feel Your hand in mine
Let faith arise to You
God of mercy and love I will praise You Lord

Oh You shine with glory Lord of light
I feel alive with You
In Your presence now I come alive
I am alive with You
There is strength when I say
I will praise You Lord

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Shawn and Michael welcomed us, and they invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Leslie called us into worship. Nori gave an update on the Oaxaca missions trip, and Chip led us in a communal prayer of blessing for the team. Tariq read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching and offered up the benediction. Lindsay led us through a time of breath prayer. John Jay invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Our musicians this morning were Leslie, Jonathan, Natalee, Jason C, Tim and Chris B. Chip and Bunny reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together. Leslie oversaw the production while Kenny worked his technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.

Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
