Liturgy for wherever you are
Third Sunday of Advent
December 11, 2022
welcome to WORSHIP
Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ.
Lyrics*
Angels We Have Heard on High
Traditional French Carol | Edward Shippen Barnes | James Chadwick
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Shepherds why this jubilee
Why your joyous strains prolong
What may the tidings be
Which inspire your heav'nly song
Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ whose birth the angels sing
Come adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord the newborn King
Joy to the World
George Frideric Handel | Isaac Watts
Joy to the world the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and heav'n and nature sing
Joy to the earth the Savior reigns
Let us our songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat repeat the sounding joy
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as far as the curse is found
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders wonders of His love
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
O come O come Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice rejoice Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel
O come Thou Dayspring come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night
And death's dark shadows put to flight
O come Desire of nations bind
All peoples in one heart and mind
Bid envy strife and quarrels cease
Fill the whole world with heaven's peace

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Paul provided the beautiful prelude harp music. John Jay welcomed us and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Mary and Bunny lit the candle of Joy and read us our litany. Chip led us in communal prayer. Tariq read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching to feed our spirits. Kit shared the way she nurtures souls in Thailand. Leslie invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Our handbell choir provided our offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Leslie, Astyn, Rick, Scott, Dave, Paul and the FBCP Choir. John Jay reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together and offered us a benediction. Leslie oversaw the production while Harriet worked her technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.
Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
