Liturgy for wherever you are
Fifth Sunday of Epiphany | Genesis 37:1-11
February 4, 2024
welcome to WORSHIP
Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ. In the River
Chris Quilala | Joshua Silverberg | Mark Alan Schoolmeesters | Ryan Williams
There is a river
Where goodness flows
There is a fountain
That drowns sorrow
There is an ocean
Deeper than fear
The tide is rising rising
There is a current
Stirring deep inside
It's overflowing
From the heart of God
The flood of heaven
Crashing over us
The tide is rising rising
Bursting bursting
Up from the ground we feel it now
Bursting bursting
Up from the ground we feel it now
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
We come alive in the river
Break open prison doors
Set all the captives free
Spring up a well spring up a well
Spring up a well in me
Nothing can stop this joy
We're dancing in the streets
Spring up a well spring up a well
Spring up a well in me
The Love of God
Frederick Martin Lehman
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from their sin.
When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When those who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.
Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And everyone a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.
Be Thou My Vision
Eleanor Henrietta Hull | Mary Elizabeth Byrne
Be Thou my vision O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art
Thou my best thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my light
Be Thou my wisdom and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father and I Thy true child
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one
Riches I heed not nor man's empty praise
Thou mine inheritance now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven my treasure Thou art
High King of heaven my victory won
May I reach heaven’s joys O bright heaven’s Sun
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my vision O ruler of all
Doxology
Thomas Ken
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise God, all creatures here below;
Praise God above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! John Jay welcomed us. Kathy O and Judah invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Lorenzo called us into worship. Lindsay led us through communion. Emi read scripture. Chip led us in communal prayer. John Jay provided us with a teaching and offered up the benediction. Lindsay invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Paul provided our offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Leslie, John Jay, Dave E, Cindie, Rick, Chris B and the FBCP Choir. Charles and Gaby reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together. Leslie oversaw the production while Kenny worked his technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.
Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
