Liturgy for wherever you are
Twelfth Sunday of Pentecost
August 21, 2022
welcome to WORSHIP
Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ.
HYMN sTUDies
We are in our preaching series on hymns that have been a part of our faith tradition over the years and formed us theologically as we have sung them in worship. Currently we are taking a look at Scripture passages that have served as hymns of praise and thanksgiving as well as core theological texts for us. This week’s passage is shown below. Unless noted otherwise, passages below are taken from the New Revised Standard Version.
Philippians 2:5-11
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
who, though he existed in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be grasped,
but emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
assuming human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a human,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
even death on a cross.
Therefore God exalted him even more highly
and gave him the name
that is above every other name,
so that at the name given to Jesus
every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

How Great Thou Art
Stuart Wesley Keene Hine
O Lord my God! When I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee:
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin.
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God how great Thou art!
Jesus Messiah
Chris Tomlin | Daniel Carson | Ed Cash | Jesse Reeves
He became sin who knew no sin
That we might become His righteousness
He humbled Himself and carried the cross
Love so amazing, love so amazing
Jesus Messiah, Name above all names
Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners
The ransom from heaven
Jesus Messiah Lord of all
His body the bread, His blood the wine
Broken and poured out all for love
The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn
Love so amazing, love so amazing
All our hope is in You
All our hope is in You
All the glory to you God
The Light of the world
I Will Exalt You
Brooke Ligertwood
I will exalt You
I will exalt You
I will exalt You
You are my God
My hiding place my safe refuge
My treasure Lord You are
My friend and King
Anointed One most holy
Because You're with me
Because You're with me
Because You're with me
I will not fear

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Chip welcomed and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Jessica H. led us in our call to worship. Dave and Christopher announced this year’s FBCP Foundation scholarship recipients before Christopher led us in communal prayer. Jerry read scripture. Lindsay led our community through a time of Lectio Divina to feed our spirits. Dustin invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Astyn and Leslie provided the offertory. Our other musicians this morning were Natalee, Jason E., and Chris B. Lindsay reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together before she offered up the benediction. Leslie oversaw the production while Harriet worked her technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.
Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
