Liturgy for wherever you are
Fourth Sunday of Advent: December 22, 2024
Love—Isaiah 49:13-16
welcome to WORSHIP
Liturgy is an ancient word for worship that is usually translated as “the work of the people.” You’ll hear the voices of our pastoral staff and our community each week, and we are so grateful that this is the work we get to do together. We prayerfully plan our worship services trusting that the Spirit will use each element to shape us and our desires as we pursue the path of Christ. To listen to previous liturgies, you can visit our Soundcloud page below to browse the archives.
Listening to the Livestream
A little before 10:30 AM you should see a play button (circle with a triangle in it) appear in the box below. Press that play button when it appears, and you should be able to hear the service live! We always start the livestream a few minutes before the service begins, so you may hear some chatter or worship music playing at first. Know that you are with us in Spirit as you worship from wherever you are.
If you come to this page after Sunday worship but before the recorded sermon is posted in its entirety, please come back again! The full recording is posted by noon on Tuesday.

Angels We Have Heard on High
Traditional French Carol | Edward Shippen Barnes | James Chadwick
Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Gloria
In excelsis Deo
Shepherds why this jubilee
Why your joyous strains prolong
Say what may the tidings be
Which inspire your heav'nly song
Come to Bethlehem and see
Christ whose birth the angels sing
Come adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord the newborn King
Joy to the World
George Frideric Handel | Isaac Watts
Joy to the world the Lord is come
Let earth receive her King
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and nature sing
And heav'n and heav'n and nature sing
Joy to the earth the Savior reigns
Let us our songs employ
While fields and floods
Rocks hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat the sounding joy
Repeat repeat the sounding joy
No more let sins and sorrows grow
Nor thorns infest the ground
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found
Far as the curse is found
Far as far as the curse is found
He rules the world with truth and grace
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness
And wonders of His love
And wonders of His love
And wonders wonders of His love
What Child is This?
What Child is this,
Who laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet
With anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary
Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and lamb are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through
The cross be borne for me, for you
Hail, hail the Word made flesh
The Babe, the Son of Mary
So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him
Raise, raise a song on high
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born
The Babe, the Son of Mary
The Holly and the Ivy
The holly and the ivy,
When they are both full grown,
Of all the trees that are in the wood,
The holly bears the crown
The holly bears a blossom,
As white as lily flow’r,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To be our sweet Saviour
The rising of the sun,
And the running of the deer
The playing of the organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.
Oh the holly bears a berry,
As red as any blood,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
To do poor sinners good
The holly bears a prickle,
As sharp as any thorn,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus Christ,
On Christmas Day in morn
The holly bears a bark,
Bitter as any gall,
And Mary bore sweet Jesus,
To redeem us all

What a wonderful group of friends we had for this week’s service! Gavin and Lindsay welcomed us and invited us into a communal practice of gratitude. Hannah, Gus and Steven lit our fourth advent candle and led us in a litany of Love. Chip honored the Volunteer of the Month and led us in communal prayer. Hannah B read scripture. John Jay provided us with a teaching and offered up the benediction. Lindsay invited us into a time of generosity through our offering. Our musicians this morning were Leslie, John Jay, Cindie, Dave E, Jason E and Scott. John Jay reminded us of the different ways we are invited to participate in communal life together. Leslie oversaw the production while Steph worked their technical magic to mix this special collaborative worship experience.
Much love from your church family at FBC Pasadena.
