Weekly Updates 11.17.2023

Tomorrow

  • Tomorrow morning is a work day for a neighbor in need. Cynthia’s dad has had health trouble recently and needs some help around the house. Please text “serve” to 626.727.9498 if you’re available to help clear out some items from his home to an on-site dumpster in South Pasadena from 9am-12pm. We’ll text back with more details.

Sunday

  • Join us at 10:30am for worship in the sanctuary! The nursery will be open as usual for our toddlers and babies. Our kids five years old and up can join us for the first part of worship and then will be dismissed to their classrooms with their leaders. They can sit with their parents or join us in the front rows at the start of service. Our youth are invited to join us for our regular lunch and fellowship after service. The Prayer team will be available at the front of the sanctuary toward the end of the service to pray with those who would like to receive prayer.

  • Join us as we pray for our global servants around the world this Sunday, November 19th, after worship in the Parlor. We invite you for thirty minutes of prayer for our FBCP-supported American Baptist servants in Mexico, Lebanon, Turkey and Thailand.

  • Gratitude Night is this Sunday, and everyone is invited! We’ll meet in the gym at 6pm. Based on your last name, as you’re able, please bring dessert (A-G), a main dish (H-Q), or a side/salad (R-Z) of about 10 servings to share with your FBCP friends and family. Childcare for toddlers and infants (4 years and under) will be provided—please text “childcare” if you have young kids coming so we can prepare, thanks! We hope you join us for this dinner where we get to enjoy the FBCP Choir, vote on business and enjoy fellowship as we potluck together.

  • This week the Friends In Deed food pantry item is baking items (flour, sugar, oil, etc).

  • Audio featured this week on our Listen page includes Pastor John Jay’s sketch of a new song we will learn together on Sunday.

Friends in Deed Gift Drive Starts this Week!

  • Partner with us in generosity through Friends In Deed’s annual Christmas for the Kids gift drive. Every year we get the honor of helping to provide gifts for Friends In Deed’s families with kids as we are reminded of God’s generous gift of Jesus to our world. We will be taking sign-ups this Sunday for 80 gift requests! Shawn will introduce our new method of filling out a paper card this Sunday to sign up. Unwrapped gifts should be dropped off at the church no later than Sunday, December 10th, and they should include the child's name and family number. Email Shawn with any questions.

November 26th

  • Join us for our annual Hanging of the Greens on Sunday, November 26th, immediately following service. Under the leadership of Cindie and Dave Ekstrand, we invite you to help us transform our communal spaces to Christmastime. We’ll have lunch first before getting to work.

  • Have you been wondering what this pickleball craze is all about?  Are you curious to know where the “pickle” part of the sport comes in?  Do you just like pickles?  Come join us at the gym for a friendly game at 7pm on Sunday, November 26th. Text “pickle” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP. If there is interest, we might even make this an every-other week event, using the gym space during the off weeks when Easy-Going Basketball is taking a break. Email Tim with questions.

Coming Up

  • Parents, mark your calendars for Parents’ Night Out on December 1st from 5:30-8:30pm! Pastors Lindsay and Mary are planning a night of fun for all kids so that parents can have an evening to themselves. We will provide programming, food, and fun for kids so that you can have a few hours to use as you wish (dinner out? a nap? a movie? Christmas shopping?). Kids can come for the full time or any fraction of it. Click here to RSVP so we can plan for food and care accordingly.

  • Have you noticed how sweet our Hospitality Team is? We’d like to appreciate all of you at our lunch after service on Sunday, December 3rd. Pastor Chip is planning a lunch that will be a mix of fun, training, and spiritually encouraging. We appreciate everything the Hospitality Team does, from handing out bulletins to passing plates during offering. If you’re not already part of this team, we invite you to join this group of helpful folks and find out more about what the Hospitality Team does. Text “welcome” to 626.727.9498 to let Pastor Chip know that you’ll be there, whether you’re already a part of the team or interested in joining the fun!

Advent Season Calendar

  • Mark your calendars for four special Sunday School mornings in the Parlor during Advent (December 3, 10, 17 and 24 from 9-10am). Pastor John Jay has been busy writing a new curriculum (and Pastor Lindsay is adapting it for families), featuring the Advent story that captures the ordinary miracle of the incarnation: our ancestors and family lineage, the cultural and political landscape, changing bodies (pregnancy and birth), and finally the companions we need for the ordinary days of our lives.

  • Candlelight Carol Service—Come and bring your friends Sunday, December 10th, to join in our 80th Annual Candlelight Carol Service at 6pm in the Sanctuary! Help us celebrate the Christmas season as we sing together and are reminded of hope made real in the birth of Jesus. Childcare for toddlers and infants (4 years and under) will be provided, and there will be a cookie reception after the service.

  • Call for Cookies—We need your help with providing the cookies for the reception after the Candlelight Service! If you’re able, please bring 2-3 dozen cookies to share with all our guests, family, and friends. You can drop them off at the Connections Desk on Sunday, December 10th, before morning worship.

  • Christmas Eve Service—Celebrate with us on Sunday, December 24th at 6pm in the Chapel

Meal Ministry

  • We are restructuring the way we ask the congregation for Meal Train deliveries for folks so that those requests don't get lost in the shuffle  of weekly emails. We want to send out food request emails to those individuals who enjoy cooking or sharing meal deliveries. We are so grateful for the 20 of you who signed up last week, and we are gathering names for one more week who want to be part of blessing the community through meals. Please text “meals” to 626.727.9498 if you’re willing to be part of our Meal Ministry. There's no pressure to participate every time a baby is born or a person has surgery, but you’ll get the emails and then you can choose to participate if the meal schedule that week works for you. Thank you for your outflow of generosity!
