Weekly Updates 08.30.2024

Tomorrow

  • 🎵Choir folks, we pray you have a meaningful time connecting with one another and rehearsing music tomorrow at your half-day retreat. Email Pastor Leslie if you have any questions. Choir will resume singing in worship service this Sunday, September 1st, and resume Wednesday rehearsals starting September 4th from 7-8:30pm in the Choir Room.

Sunday

  • Join us for worship in the sanctuary at 10:30am as we partake in communion together (note: crackers are gluten free)! The nursery will be open as usual for our toddlers and babies. Please note that because this will be the first Sunday of the month, our kids five years old and up will join us in the sanctuary for service. Our youth are invited to join us for our regular lunch and fellowship after service. The Prayer team will be available at the front of the sanctuary toward the end of the service to pray with those who would like to receive prayer.

  • Our FBCPride Group meets for a potluck lunch after worship this Sunday, September 1st, in Room 214. The LGBTQ+ community, parents and allies 16+ are welcome, and you can read more about the group here. Text “pride” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP. Feel free to bring a friend. Last year we met in the evenings; however, this year we will meet quarterly at lunchtime after worship. More details to come at the lunch!

  • The Friends In Deed food pantry item this week is canned tuna and chicken.

Sunday School is Back!

  • Summer break is winding down, and we are excited to jump into some new learning topics. Beginning September 8th from 9-10am on Sundays for eight weeks, we will have two Fall Sunday School class options: Rene Scheys will teach Spiritual Values in Literature: Quarantine (1998) by Jim Crace, and Jennifer Wolfe will teach History in the Gospels. Both are professor-level teachers, and you won’t want to miss soaking in their expertise. Text “school” to 626.727.9498 or click here to register.

Coming Up

  • Look out for yummy treats for sale at our Oaxaca Bake Sale on Sundays September 8th and 22nd (you’ll be here early for Sunday School anyway!). Our Oaxaca Missions Team will be selling goodies to raise money for their trip to Mexico this Fall. Let us know if you would like to bake for their sale. You’ll find treats in the courtyard before worship and the lobby afterwards (if there’s some left)!

  • Our Yarn Craft Group welcomes any crafty knitters or crocheters to join the biweekly fun in the Parlor after worship on Sunday, September 8th and in the Southside Room on September 29th. Bring snacks to share (optional) and a water bottle. Email Whitney or Justine if you have any questions.

  • Our Passive-Aggressive Pickleball group will meet on Sunday, September 8th, at 7pm in the gym off Union St. Text “pickle” to 626.727.9498 to join the text updates for this group. Email Tim with questions. We have paddles and balls available; bring your parking ticket for validation, and a bottle of water.

  • On September 15th, the Deacons and staff are partnering for a special Listening Sunday. We are going to utilize our normal 10:30am worship time a little differently on this day, creating a unique experience of listening and learning together. We will conclude our time in the Gym and Park with taco carts provided by the church to celebrate the day. So all the joy of a potluck, with no casserole dishes to wash! No need to bring anything, expect yourself. For the younger kids we will have an outdoor gymnastics obstacle course put on by the one and only Nolan McSparran! If you have questions, you can hit me up at johnjay@fbcpasadena.com.

  • Our next monthly Grief Group meets on Sunday, September 22nd, at 9am in the 2nd Floor Prayer Chapel (one of our favorite spaces in the whole church!). It is a space for anyone experiencing grief or loss to be with others in a similar season. Reach out to Jon Rinkus if you are interested in joining this group. Jon is a trained Hospital Chaplain through Fuller and provides a rich space for folks to process grief.

De-Escalation Team

  • Thanks to the folks who signed up last week for our De-escalation Team, a team focused on caring for the needs of folks who might walk in off the streets needing help. Pastor John Jay shared last week that being in an urban setting, FBCP gets regular visitors with varying levels of physical and mental needs. We want to have a few volunteers trained and available to talk with folks who might need help calming down or talking to someone, while the pastors are busy during the service. Text the word "calm" to 626.727.9498 if you enjoy this line of work.

Small Groups

  • We are excited to launch small groups mid-September and we have heard interest from quite a few folks. You can text “small” to 626.727.9498 if you’d like to join the fun, and we will follow up with more information. These groups will create opportunities for growth and formation in the context of an intimate circle of belonging in homes around the city. Email Pastor Lindsay with questions.
