Weekly Updates 08.09.2024

Saturday

  • Ladies of all ages, we hope you can join us for brunch in the Southside Room tomorrow, August 10, from 10am-12pm. This month, Pastor Leslie will be sharing her story of faith and a time of communal singing. We hope you can join us for a time of fellowship, food and fun together as we continue to deepen our friendships with one another. Thanks to Shawn, Rebekah and Pastor Lindsay for organizing this event!

Sunday

  • Our monthly Grief Group meets this Sunday, August 11th, at 9am in Room 214. It is a space for anyone experiencing grief or loss to be with others in a similar season. Reach out to Jon Rinkus if you are interested in joining this group. Jon is a trained Hospital Chaplain through Fuller and provides a rich space for folks to process grief.

  • We are excited for our young members to promote in our Family Ministries! Parents of kindergartners, Pastors Lindsay and Mary will meet you in the courtyard at 9:45am to walk you to the elementary classroom upstairs. Sixth graders are invited to stay in their elementary classroom for one last party during worship, and they can start meeting in the lobby after worship to join our youth gathering and lunch. Email Pastor Lindsay with questions.

  • Join us at 10:30am for worship in the sanctuary! We invite all of our students and educators to bring a backpack, briefcase, whistle or pencil to worship for our teacher-student blessing for the upcoming school year during service. The nursery will be open as usual for our toddlers and babies. Our youth are invited to join us for our regular lunch and fellowship after service. The Prayer team will be available at the front of the sanctuary toward the end of the service to pray with those who would like to receive prayer.

  • A reminder to folks interested in leading a small group to please attend the Small Group Leaders Training this Sunday, August 11th, after worship in the Southside Room. Lunch provided. Email Pastor Lindsay with questions.

  • Our Passive-Aggressive Pickleball group will meet this Sunday, August 11th, at 7pm in the gym off Union St. Text “pickle” to 626.727.9498 if you haven’t already. Email Tim with questions. We have paddles and balls available; bring your parking ticket for validation, and a bottle of water.

  • The Friends In Deed food pantry item this week is cereal.

Brewington-Mathis Meal Train

  • We rejoice with Galvin and Tyler as they celebrate welcoming Baby Noah into their family. What a joy to welcome a precious new life to our church family and keep them in our prayers. Here’s a copy of the link Pastor Lindsay sent out earlier for those who are considering supporting the family with meals while they adjust to parenthood: Meals for Galvin & Tyler

Small Groups

  • We are excited to launch small groups this fall. Please let us know of your interest to lead or attend weekly groups in homes around the area. You can text “small” to 626.727.9498, and we will follow up with more information as we launch in September. These groups will create opportunities for growth and formation in the context of an intimate circle of belonging. Email Pastor Lindsay with questions.

Sabbath

  • This month our worship service focuses on the Sabbath and (re)learning rhythms of rest together. Pastor John Jay referenced Abraham Joshua Heschel’s The Sabbath, last Sunday as an optional quick read to consider adding to your collection.

Coming Up

  • Our Yarn Craft Group welcomes any crafty knitters or crocheters to join the biweekly fun in the Parlor after worship on Sunday, August 18th. Bring snacks to share (optional) and a water bottle. Email Whitney or Justine if you have any questions.

  • Oaxaca Team—We are having a team meeting for our missions trip (October 18-26th), after service on Sunday, August 18th. At this meeting, we'll hear from Dave Miller, who leads the ministry with Adventures in Life, and learn more about specifics of our trip. Lunch will be provided. Email Pastor John Jay with any questions.

  • If you’re interested in helping with Family Ministries, but missed the training in May, we invite you to let Pastor Lindsay know about your interest. We are having a Family Ministry Training on Sunday, August 25, at 9:30am in the nursery. Pastors Lindsay and Mary will go over how they thoughtfully connect with kids of all ages during worship. All staff and volunteers go through a background check process, and we take our family ministry seriously so they receive the best care we can give them. Thanks for considering this fun way to partner in nurturing the community at FBCP! Text “train” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP for the training, and email Pastors Lindsay and Mary with questions.

  • Our Basics Class will meet after worship on Sunday, August 25th, at 12:30pm in the Southside Room. This lunch is for those who are interested in learning about First Baptist Pasadena. Pastors John Jay and Chip will walk you through our church history, our American Baptist denomination, and the meaning behind some of our practices like baptism, communion and membership. Lunch will be provided. Text “basics” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP. Email Pastor Chip for more details and/or if you are attending and will need childcare.

  • Do you love to sing? The FBCP  Choir Half-Day Retreat is around the corner on Labor Day weekend! On  Saturday, August 31st, we will gather at Atherton at 9am for a time of reflection and rehearsal. We will have coffee and snacks in the morning and will conclude our time together with lunch at noon. If you’re interested, please text “choir” to 626.727.9498 or click here to access the registration link. The choir will resume singing in worship service on Sunday, September 1st, and resume Wednesday rehearsals starting September 4th at 7pm.

  • Our FBCPride Group is regrouping after summer break. Enjoy a potluck lunch after worship on Sunday, September 1st, in the Southside Room. If you’re newer and would like to check out the group, please do! The LGBTQ+ community, parents and allies 16+ are welcome. Text “pride” to 626.727.9498 to let us know you’re coming. Feel free to bring a friend. Last year we met in the evenings; however, this year we will meet at lunchtime after worship. More details to come at the lunch!
