FBCP Families | 12.09.2022

Hi Friends,

This week we will light the Advent candle for joy, and that feels like a fitting theme as we look forward to our annual Candlelight Carol Service. We are so excited to reflect on the season of Advent and worship God together at this special service. Our kids and youth always are a joyful part of the evening, so be ready for a beautiful time together! I pray that we all encounter Christ this season as we ponder the mystery of his birth and presence on earth.

Parents, remember that tomorrow (Saturday) is the Carol Service rehearsal for kids and youth from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Please meet us in the chapel and be ready for a fun morning together as we finalize our preparations for Sunday. We will provide some snacks to help everyone get through the morning.

On Sunday evening, kids and youth can be dropped off at the chapel at 5:30 PM. We will provide substantial finger foods for dinner, and kids will remain under our supervision until the service is over.

SUNDAY

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Childcare will be open starting at 10:20 AM.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for the start of worship, and then they will be dismissed with their leaders to their classrooms. They are welcome to start service with their parents or to join Pastor Mary and me in the front pews. This week we will continue to explore the season of Advent and focus on the theme of peace. We'll make some peaceful decorations to hang up at home to remind us of the peace of Christ. Here are some questions to ponder together as a family.

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • Where do you feel most peaceful?

  • How can we be peacemakers in the world?

YOUTH

We are on for our regular youth programming after worship this Sunday! They can gather in the front pews and then head up to the youth room together for lunch and small group time. We’ll wrap up at 1:30 PM, and parents can pick up their youth at the park entrance off Union Street.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families.

So much love and gratitude for you,

Pastor Lindsay

FBCP Families | 12.03.2022

Hi Friends,

Last week our kids made their own candles to use at home during the Advent season. Parents have sent photos showing us various practices their families have taken up with these candles. I pray that each of you find moments to ponder the themes of Advent, especially in the simple moments families share at home.

This week we will light the candle of peace during worship, and I have found myself grateful for the reminder and comfort of God's peace. Even the simple act of sitting in the presence of candlelight for a few minutes and slowing down to breathe can ground us in the peace we are always promised in Christ. I look forward to worship tomorrow as we continue to move through Advent together!

Kids Choir

We are so excited for our kids to help lead us in worship at our annual Candlelight Carol Service on December 11th. As a reminder, our kids above nursery age will be singing two songs at this special program, as well as participating in our nativity. For now we are focusing on the first song. Here is a song sheet and here is a recording so they can practice at home. Our hand-motion guru, the fabulous Cynthia, made this video to help kids practice their movements at home, too. Please mark your calendars for the dates:

  • December 10 — Carol Service Rehearsal for kids from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

  • December 11 — Carol Service (kids should arrive at 5:30 PM)

Public Theology and Local Partnerships Interest Meeting

You are invited to find out more about our partnerships with LA Voice and the Clergy Community Coalition before worship tomorrow at 9 AM in the Southside Room. Pastor John Jay, Andrea Vocos from LA Voice, and our own Cynthia Kirby will be there to share more about what these partnerships mean and ways for you to get involved with local outreach and initiatives to create a more just and thriving city. Breakfast will be served, and we will have childcare available at that hour for those with kids. Please let us know if you plan to attend and need childcare.

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Childcare will be open starting at 10:20 AM.

Our kids five to ten years old will join their families in the sanctuary for worship. We love their presence in worship and the chance to be together to share in communion. You might want to have some discussion this week about how your kids are experiencing church and our worship service. It's a great time to let them ask questions, too!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What is the meaning of the Advent candle we light?

  • What is one part of worship that you enjoyed?

  • What are you still wondering about after being in worship this week?

YOUTH

This week our youth will gather for our regular lunch and discussion after worship. Yay! We are so excited to hang with our youth. Parents can pick them up at the park gate at 1:30 PM.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families.

So much love and gratitude for you,

Pastor Lindsay

FBCP Families | 11.26.2022

Hi Friends,

I am so excited to begin the season of Advent with you tomorrow! Our worship services will include a litany for the lighting of our Advent wreath each Sunday, and this week we light a candle for hope. I have been pondering the possibility of hope and its ability to resist the powers and principalities. Hope goes against scarcity and fear, inviting us into a relationship of trust and imagination with God. You certainly give me hope for what is possible through the love of God in community. You may want to have your own candle-lighting practice at home with your kids as a way to move through Advent together. May we be a people of hope in our relationships and in the spaces we go as we intentionally wait for the birth of Christ this season.

Kids Choir

We are so excited for our kids to help lead us in worship at our annual Candlelight Carol Service on December 11th. Could you please respond here and let us know if your child is able to attend and participate that evening?

As a reminder, our kids above nursery age will be singing two songs at this special program, as well as participating in our nativity. For now we are focusing on the first song. Here is a song sheet and here is a recording so they can practice at home. Our hand-motion guru, the fabulous Cynthia, made this video to help kids practice their movements at home, too. Breakfast will be served, and we will have childcare available at that hour for those with kids. Please let us know if you plan to attend and need childcare.

(Hint: It's a warm and comforting Parents, please send your children in warm clothing in these colder months as our building can get a little chilly.

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What does it mean to have hope and to live from a perspective of hope?

  • What are some ways we want to prepare for the birth of Jesus as a family this year?

This week our youth will gather for a brief meeting over lunch to talk about plans for the carol service, and then they are invited to help with the hanging of the greens. They can meet in the sanctuary down in front where the youth sit. It will be a fun and festive time together after worship, and we are looking forward to being together!

FBCP Families | 11.18.2022

Hi Friends,

With Thanksgiving and Advent around the corner, I pray that you and your families find ways to balance the busyness of the coming season with moments to slow down and enjoy simple moments. This post has some fun ways to bring a fresh gratitude practice into your own family rituals if you are looking for a new tradition around thankfulness. I am always amazed at the ways that gratitude impacts our bodies and minds and our overall health. Thank you for being a congregation who is willing to ground our worship in gratitude each week. I look forward to our time together on Sunday morning and at our potluck that evening!

Gratitude Night

This Sunday is our Gratitude Night potluck and church business meeting. Please note that childcare will be available for kids 18 months and younger. Our toddlers and preschool-age children are invited to join us in the gym for the evening, and we welcome the fullness of their presence!

Please mark your calendars for the dates:

  • December 10 — Carol Service Rehearsal (kids needed from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM )

  • December 11 — Carol Service (kids should arrive at 5:30 PM)

Attention Nursery Families!

We are preparing for our upcoming services on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. Could you please take a minute to fill out this quick survey to help us understand your plans? We know that there may be lots going on for families and various traditions they have, so we want to make sure we have a sense of our childcare needs coming up. Thank you!

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Childcare will open at 10:20 AM.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for the start of worship and then be dismissed to their classrooms together. This week we will be creating tangible reminders that we are living tabernacles, and we are so excited to see the creativity and imagination of our amazing kids. Parents, please send your children in warm clothing in these colder months as our building can get a little chilly.

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What comes to mind when you think of being a living tabernacle?

  • What kind of a God wants to dwell within people? In other words, what does God's desire to dwell in you tell you about God's character and how you are made?

YOUTH

This week we have a special youth happening after worship! Steven Loose will be baptized on Sunday, and he has invited all youth to attend a special celebration lunch at Mama's Brick Oven Pizza after church. Youth can be picked up at Mama's at 2PM. Let me know if your youth needs a ride to or from lunch. Address: Mamma’s Brick Oven Pizza & Pasta, 1007 Fair Oaks Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families.

So much love and gratitude for you,

Pastor Lindsay

Hi Friends,

Thanks to all the parents who were able to bring their kids early for music practice last Sunday!

Parents' Night Out

It’s almost here! Parent’s Night Out is this Friday, November 18th, from 5:30-8:30 PM. Pastor Mary and I are planning a night of fun for all kids so that parents can have an evening to themselves. We will provide programming, food, and fun for kids so that you can have a few hours to use as you wish (dinner out? a nap? a movie? Christmas shopping?). Kids can come for the full time or any fraction of it. It's a win-win for kids and adults. Yay! Please RSVP here to help us plan all the fun.

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Childcare will be open starting at 8:55 AM for those whose parents are attending a Sunday School class.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for the start of worship and then head to their classrooms together. This week we will wrap up our study of the tabernacle and explore the ways that we are created to be living tabernacles, too. We'll make space for a special visitor to share his story of being a tabernacle, and then we'll have time for creating and building together!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • Who in your life makes you feel God's love and presence? This week, tell them they are a living tabernacle!

  • How has God made you unique, and how can those special traits help you show God’s love?

YOUTH

This week the youth will not meet after worship so that youth can attend our all-church movie day. If your youth is planning to attend the movie, there will be lunch provided for them after service. We will be back on for our regular youth gathering next Sunday.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families.

So much love and gratitude for you,

Pastor Lindsay

Hi Friends,

Happy November! Tomorrow is a regular all-church Sunday, so kids above nursery age can join us in service. We will have communion and share in a rich time of worship together. Tomorrow we are also asking kids to come at 10:00 AM to practice our advent songs before worship starts. Parents, please bring your kids to the chapel and then head to the courtyard, where we'll have pastries waiting so parents can hang out and connect before worship. I know it makes for a slightly earlier morning, but it will be a special and important time for kids and parents alike. Thanks for helping us prepare for our special advent service.

Parent Night Out

Mark your calendars for Friday, November 18th, from 5:30-8:30 PM! Pastor Mary and I are planning a night of fun for all kids so that parents can have an evening to themselves. Carol Service

I know it's hard to believe that advent is approaching, but we are excited to prepare for the season and our special Candlelight Carol Service! Our kids above nursery age will be singing two songs at this special program, as well as participating in our nativity. For now we are focusing on the first song. Here is a song sheet and here is a recording so they can practice at home. Please mark your calendars for these dates:

Our congregation, in turn, will get to experience the diverse and special presence of our younger church family members. We will have snacks and an activity sheet available. Can't wait to see you there!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What were people invited to give for the tabernacle building project?

  • What are some ways you can give generously other than with money?

YOUTH

We are on for our regular youth lunch and discussion after worship this Sunday, and then we will head to McDonald park from 2-4 PM for a Pasadena Youth Coalition hangout with other local youth groups. Let me know if your youth can attend and whether or not they need a ride. We look forward to some extra time with our amazing youth!

Pastors Lindsay and Mary are planning a night of fun for all kids so that parents can have an evening to themselves. We will provide programming, food, and fun for kids so that you can have a few hours to use as you wish (dinner out? a nap? a movie? Christmas shopping?). Kids can come for the full time or any fraction of it. Click here to RSVP so we can plan for food and care accordingly.

  • Join us after worship on Sunday, November 20th, for the Oaxaca Missions Information Lunch. Our own Nori Ochi has a longstanding relationship with the director of Adventures in Life Mission, and you can join us if you would like to hear information about ministry opportunities to Oaxaca, Mexico, or if you have any questions about Adventures In Life in general. Lunch is provided. The deadline to sign up is Friday, November 18th. Text “missions” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP. Email Pastor Chip if you have any questions.

  • Gratitude Night will be another time for potluck (yum, yum)! We’ll meet in the gym at 6 p.m. on Sunday, November 20th, as noted above. Based on your last name, as you’re able, please bring a side or salad (A-G), dessert (H-O), or main dish (P-Z) of about 10 servings to share with your FBCP friends and family. We hope you join us for a wonderful time of fellowship, food, and friendship!

  • Join us here at FBCP for an art therapy workshop led by Kit Ripley on Saturday, December 3rd, from 10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Kit is one of the global servants we support who works with women and girls in Thailand. She’ll share how she uses art therapy to help people heal from trauma before we eat lunch and Kit leads us in a hands-on art therapy workshop. She'll take you through a creative and contemplative exercise designed to help you take stock of where God has you in your current season of life and process what God might be inviting you to next. No artistic abilities required—this workshop is not about creating a polished product! We value the way that creative practices can connect us to God, and this will be a really rich time of listening and creating together. Text "art" to 626.727.9498 to sign up. Email Pastor Lindsay if you have any questions.

FBCP Families | 10.29.2022

Hi Friends,

As a reminder, tomorrow is an all-church Sunday, so kids above nursery age can join us in service. We are looking forward to having their presence in worship both this week and next week! Please note that after the sermon tomorrow, our kids will be dismissed to practice singing with Cynthia in preparation for our Candlelight Carol Service (see below!).

Next Sunday, November 6th, we are asking kids to come early to practice before worship starts. Parents, please bring your kids to the chapel at 10:00 AM. We'll have pastries in the courtyard so parents can hang out and connect before worship. I know it makes for a slightly earlier morning, but it will be a special and important time for kids and parents alike. Thanks for helping us prepare for this special service.

Estate Seminar (and Kid Halloween Fun!)

The Foundation is hosting a free estate planning seminar after worship tomorrow, and we will be providing a fun Halloween hangout for kids as our childcare offering during that time. This seminar, led by an attorney, is an excellent opportunity to learn about creating a will or trust as a means of taking care of your loved ones. We hope that many of our parents can come and that their kids can join us for some Halloween fun! You can RSVP here to save your spot and sign up for childcare.

Parent Night Out

Mark your calendars for Friday, November 18th from 5:30-8:30 PM!

Please mark your calendars for the dates:

  • December 10 — Carol Service Rehearsal for adults and kids

  • December 11 — Carol Service

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Childcare will be open starting at 8:55 AM for those whose parents are attending a Sunday School class.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for worship. This is a fifth Sunday, which is unusual, and our kids will get to experience our choir singing, our All Saints remembrance, and a teaching on the golden calf to complement their own exploration of the tabernacle this month. We will have snacks and an activity sheet available. Kids can choose to sit with Pastor Mary and me in the front pews if they wish.

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • Why did the Israelites make a golden calf?

  • What do you like best about our sanctuary?

YOUTH

We are on for our youth programming after worship this Sunday. This week they will get to do some extra fun Halloween activities with our kids whose parents are staying for the Foundation seminar, so we’ll wrap up around 2:15 PM this week, and parents can pick up their youth at the park entrance off Union Street. Let me know if your youth needs to leave early.

Have a wonderful weekend!

So much love and gratitude for you,

Pastor Lindsay

Cheering on Kids & Youth

We love to support our kids and youth if they are involved in something where we can come out and watch/support/cheer them on. If your child or youth has local games, performances, competitions, or other ways they explore their gifts, we would love to try and see them in their element. Feel free to pass along schedules or event information as things come up. Thanks for letting us know how to support your kids outside of Sunday mornings!
