FBCP Families | 06.29.2024

Beloved Friends and Families with Kids,

We had an absolute blast at camp this past week as we explored how to listen well to all the amazing ways God speaks to us. We are so thankful for everyone who helped make it such a wonderful experience for all ages! We had youth, adults, and campers participating in LEGO challenges, singing, gymnastics, a sound recording lab, nature walks, labyrinths, a human knot activity, whole-body listening, and interactive snack times. We even had a real tortoise visit us! This Sunday we will sing a song in worship that we learned in camp. We pray it reminds you that we have a God who loves to hear from us and to speak to us. What a gift to spend a week building our intergenerational connections and becoming better listeners as the body of Christ!

Youth Swim Party!

The Powells have graciously offered their pool and home to us this summer for some fun in the sun. All youth are invited to come hang out after worship on Sunday, July 14, from 12:30-4 pm. We'll gather after worship and head over to the Powell's for lunch, swimming, volleyball, basketball, and trampoline play. Let me know if your youth can join us so I can get a count for food. I'll send out the address to parents as it gets closer. Yay!

Summer Youth Retreat

As a reminder, the retreat will take place July 19-21 in the San Diego area. We are so pumped for this chance to get intentional time with our youth in a new setting! You can register your youth here. Let me know if you have questions about your youth's participation or if cost is an issue.

Promotion Sunday  | August 11

This year our Sunday for kids to move up to an older age group will be on August 11th! We are excited for our kindergarteners and sixth graders to make their transition to our older kids and youth groups, respectively. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer. In the meantime, they can continue to participate and soak up the time with their current groups. Yay for growth!

Tutoring

One of our own youth, Judah Alvaro, has started his own tutoring services. If you would like to talk to him about working with your child or to find out more about his areas of expertise, check out the flier below for more information. Yay for youth leaning into their gifts!

Last week our kids and youth did such a beautiful job leading in worship with song! Thanks to our adult choir, Pastor Leslie, and our parents for supporting this intergenerational experience. We are so blessed to have a church family where all ages get to be in community. This Sunday there are two things you won't want to miss! Joy Chura will be dedicated during worship, and then we will celebrate Pastor Chip's ordination service at 3pm in the sanctuary. We hope you can join us for these special moments in the life of our church community. See you tomorrow!

Summer Youth Retreat

We are making final arrangements for our upcoming youth trip and can't wait to hang with your amazing kids. In order to secure lodging, we would like to get a head count as soon as possible. As a reminder, the retreat will take place July 19-21 in the San Diego area. You can register your youth here. Let me know if you have questions about your youth's participation or if cost is an issue.

Kids Camp Registration

We are already making plans for camp this summer, and registration is now open! Camp will run June 24-28 from 9am-12pm each day. We are excited to help our kids encounter God's love together with people from our church family! Youth families, please note that the youth are invited to help again this year, and this can count for community service hours if they have any requirements through school or other organizations.

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Our nursery staff will be ready starting at 8:50 AM for those who are attending Sunday School before service and 10:20 AM for those coming just to worship. This week our nursery kids will explore how God is a good shepherd.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for the start of worship and then be dismissed to head to their classrooms together. They can begin service with their families or sit with Pastor Mary in the front pews. This week we will explore what it means to be formed by one another in the image of Christ. We will also have a special guest Nolan McSparran for some fun movement activities!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What does spiritual formation mean?

  • What are ways we form each other when we gather together?

YOUTH

This week our youth will do a special creative project for our youth room during our youth gathering, so please try to make it if you are in town! We will gather in the lobby and head over to the Southside room together. Lunch will be included, and we will wrap up at 1:30pm as usual.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families!

With deep affection for you,

Pastor Lindsay

Beloved Friends and Families with Kids,

Tomorrow, June 2, our kids and youth will be joining our adult choir in singing during worship. We have been practicing during our regular Sunday time with kids and youth, and you can help them practice at home one last time with this listening track and with these lyrics. We are asking parents to please bring kids and youth to the sanctuary at 9:30 am tomorrow to practice with the choir one last time. All kids who are singing will sit together in the front pews for the start of worship and then can return to sit with their parents after the choir anthem.  We'll have pastries for parents so they can hang out before worship. On this Sunday we will also take time to honor and celebrate our graduates, so it will be a full and beautiful service with a chance to bless those in this milestone moment. I look forward to a full time of worship with your families tomorrow!

FBCP Families | 05.18.2024

Beloved Friends and Families with Kids,

Right now at the church, some amazing intergenerational work is happening (see below)! Our park space is full of people of all ages digging in dirt so that new life can grow and make our space even more beautiful. Knowing that these plants came from Brian and Renee's home where there was so much destruction is a brilliant image of God bringing new life from ashes and beauty persisting in spite of loss. Our youth room is full of youth and adults who are painting, cleaning, eating donuts, and rocking out to music. Many thanks to all our helping hands for giving time on a Saturday to connect with each other and create spaces for us to gather meaningfully. A special thanks to Jesen and Jessica for leading the youth room renovation—I am so thankful for their initiative and vision!

Mark Your Calendars for June 2!

On Sunday, June 2, our kids and youth will be joining our adult choir in singing during worship. We will be practicing during our regular Sunday time with kids and youth in the coming weeks, and you can help them practice at home, too. You can play the listening track and sing along with these lyrics. We'll ask kids and youth to arrive at 9:30 am that day to practice, and we'll have pastries for parents so y'all can hang out before worship. On that Sunday we will also take time to honor and celebrate our graduates of all ages, so it will be a full and beautiful service with a chance to bless those in this milestone moment. Please fill out this form if someone in your family is graduating from high school or any higher education so we can include you in the blessing!

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Our nursery staff will be ready starting at 8:50 AM for those who are attending Sunday School before service and 10:20 AM for those coming just to worship. This week our nursery kids will continue to explore how Jesus taught and healed people.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for the start of worship and then be dismissed to head to their classrooms together. They can begin service with their families or sit with Pastor Mary in the front pews. This week we explore Pentecost Sunday and celebrate as a church family. We are so excited to share in this special time together!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What do we celebrate on Pentecost?

  • What stands out to you as you hear the story of Pentecost? What are you wondering?

YOUTH

We are back on for our youth gathering this week, but this time with a special guest! Jenn Edic will be joining us to share about her experience in Benin, and we are excited to hear more about her friends on the other side of the world. We'll have lunch and wrap up at 1:30pm as usual.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families!

With deep affection for you,

Pastor Lindsay

FBCP Families | 05.11.2024

Beloved Friends and Families with Kids,

I know that May can be a busy month for families with kids, especially as the school year comes to an end and graduation season unfolds. I am praying that you and your kids feel permission to rest and play in the midst of all the work and hustle.

As we honor the mother figures in our lives tomorrow, I wanted to share this post by Kat Armas (author of Abuelita Faith) on the topic of God and Jesus as mother figures. If you don't have time to read the whole post, then I encourage you to take a look at the poem provided at the end. It's called "God Our Mother" by Allison Woodard, and it is the poem read over me by members of FBCP at my baby shower when I was pregnant with Emma Kate. May we feel the expansive and tender heart of God as a mother figure who loves and nurtures us without end.

Youth Room Renovation

We are so excited to begin fixing up our youth room to make it more inviting and useful for our gatherings. If you want to help us beautify our space, we could use some help in a few ways. First, we are collecting used (but in good condition) picture frames of various sizes and styles. If you have any you don't want anymore, we would gladly take them! And if you're a pro at thrift stores and happen to see any there, we would gladly take those, too. Second, we are planning a work day to rip out carpet and paint the walls. If you're up for helping, join us on May 18th! More details to come, but you can email me if you want to sign up or get more information. Thanks for supporting our growing youth as they reimagine their space and all the ways they can share it with the congregation at large!

  • What are some traits you love most about your mom?

  • How can our moms and mother figures help us understand God's love and presence in our lives?

YOUTH

Parents, my apologies—we will NOT have youth this week so that youth can spend time with their moms. We will be back on for our time together next week!

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families!

Pastor Lindsay

See you soon!

FBCP Families | 05.04.2024

Beloved Friends and Families with Kids,

We just had a Family Ministry training, and let me tell you—the folks showing up to connect with our kids are just so fabulous! We focused a lot on what our ministry with kids is about as well as what it is not. When kids show up on Sunday, they are just as vital to our worship and growth and learning and community as any adult. Our calling is to give them the proper value and place to show up, be themselves, and form us as much as we help form them. Coincidentally, this week I came across this review of a book on children in liberation theologies. It's a powerful reminder that children have always been part of the story God is telling, and our wholeness and freedom are tied up in how we relate to kids. Pastor Mary and I are so thankful that we get to introduce our kids to a new group of awesome adults—and to introduce a new group of adults to our amazing kids.

Read on for all the upcoming fun related to kids and youth.

On that Sunday we will also take time to honor and celebrate our graduates of all ages, so it will be a full and beautiful service with a chance to bless those in this milestone moment.

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Our nursery staff will be ready starting at 8:50 AM for those who are attending Sunday School before service and 10:20 AM for those coming just to worship. This week our nursery kids will continue to explore the story of the prodigal son.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for worship and communion since this is the first Sunday of the month. Make sure your child picks up a fun survey to fill out during worship—Pastor Mary will have that ready in the lobby, and it's always a favorite activity for our kids (and youth!). We will begin a four-week focus on forgiveness in our teaching time. It will be a beautiful morning together as a church family, and we welcome the presence of our kids in worship!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • Think of a time you forgave someone. What was that like?

  • Think about a time you found it hard to apologize. Why was it so hard?

  • Is there anything you need to forgive yourself for?

YOUTH

This week our youth will join us for the all-church potluck after worship! We'll be back on for our regular youth gathering next Sunday.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families!

With deep affection for you,

Pastor Lindsay

  • End the afternoon with some music in the front yard of the Ellis home. Bennett shared a gratitude last week about the excitement of putting on a musical show with other neighborhood kids, and his family was kind enough to share this flyer if anyone is interested in attending from 3-6pm. Bring a blanket and enjoy!

Sunday

  • Our Spring Sunday School classes continue through May 19. Details can be found here. Email Pastor Chip with questions.

  • Come get a copy of Pastor John Jay’s first book(let)! Ordinary Theology is a condensed treatment of the core beliefs motivating the leadership of our church community, written from the context of the primary teaching pastor. We printed these booklets small enough to fit in your back pocket or purse/fanny pack, and the costs have been covered by the Foundation (many thanks). We printed a few hundred in this first run, so plenty to go around. This booklet is just the beginning in a series of public writings for our church community and beyond, so keep your eyes peeled for more writings in the months ahead. If you love what you read, take a second copy and share with a friend. Yay books!

  • Name Tag First Sundays—we invite you to find the table in the lobby on each first Sunday of the month and write out your name as a step towards learning new faces and meeting new friends.

  • Join us for worship in the sanctuary at 10:30am as we partake in communion together (note: crackers are gluten free)! The nursery will be open as usual for our toddlers and babies. The Prayer team will be available at the front of the sanctuary toward the end of the service to pray with those who would like to receive prayer.

  • This Sunday, May 5th, is our all-church potluck after worship in the gym. Thank you to our Volunteer Crew Kathy, Carol, Susan, Matt, Cindy, Michael S, Mary W, Rich, Dave E, Cindie and Eric. The church will provide drinks and desserts for this Cinco de Mayo potluck, and we encourage you to bring a main dish for 8-10 people to share if you can.

Coming Up

  • Movie producer and FBCP member Bruno invites us all to a sneak peek showing of his latest project Why in the World on Friday, May 10th, at 6pm in the Chapel. This movie explores the deeper questions of life, and Bruno can’t wait to hear your thoughts!  In it, two friends follow a wise, slightly eccentric homeless man who they hope will show them the meaning of life.  Armed with nothing in their quest but five basic questions, they cross more than 50 countries in search of answers, piling one uproarious misadventure on top of another as they seek to crack the code of existence. Text “movie” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP. See you there!

Also in May

  • We invite all women to enjoy a five-minute complimentary massage on Mother’s Day, May 12th. Massage chairs will be set up in the back of the sanctuary and will be available throughout the service.

  • Pastor Lindsay and team are so excited to begin fixing up the youth room to make it more inviting and useful for gatherings. If you want to help, we could use some help in a few ways. First, we are collecting used (but in good condition) picture frames of various sizes and styles. If you have any you don't want anymore, they would gladly take them! And if you're a pro at thrift stores and happen to see any there, they would gladly take those, too. Second, they are planning a work day to rip out carpet and paint the walls. Lastly, if you would like to prepare some lunch or snacks for the work day, that's another way you could join the fun. If you're up for helping, join the group on May 18th! More details to come, but you can text “paint” to 626.727.9498 to let Pastor Lindsay know you want to help. Thanks for supporting our growing youth as they reimagine their space and all the ways they can share it with the congregation at large!

  • You’re invited to our next FBCPride Group Meeting on Sunday, May 19th, from 5-7pm in the Southside Room. We always enjoy our potluck together, so please sign up here if you are able. Text “pride” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP if you are new, and email Kevin and Sally if you have any questions. This group is open to the LGBTQ+ community, parents and allies ages 16+.

  • Calling all service-oriented folks to our final recruitment meeting for our October missions trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. Pastor John Jay would love for you to join him on this trip! We’ll gather for lunch after worship on Sunday, May 26th, for about an hour to nail down details and solidify our team. The cost for this week-long trip will be about $1000 plus your airfare. Text “Oaxaca” to RSVP for the 26th.

  • Join us as we pray for our global servants around the world for 30 minutes after worship on Sunday, May 26th, in the Parlor. We use this time to remember our FBCP-supported American Baptist servants in Mexico, Lebanon, Turkey and Thailand as they love and support others around the world and share the light of Christ through service.

Beloved Friends and Families with Kids,

Tomorrow will be another full day of worship as we wrap up our series on Genesis. We are so excited to gather and be together as a church family. It's also Pastor Mary's birthday, which will make it extra special! We are so thankful for her and all the ways she loves our church family of all ages. Happy Birthday, Pastor Mary!

If you would like to prepare some lunch or snacks for the work day, that's another way you could join the fun. Thanks for supporting our growing youth as they reimagine their space and all the ways they can share it with the congregation at large!

Kids Camp Registration

We are already making plans for camp this summer, and registration is now open! Camp will run June 24-28 from 9am-12pm each day. We are excited to help our kids encounter God's love together with people from our church family!  If you’re interested in helping out, please let me know. The more, the merrier!

SUNDAY

KIDS

Our nursery room is open this Sunday for babies and toddlers four years old and under. Our nursery staff will be ready starting at 8:50 AM for those who are attending Sunday School before service. This week our nursery kids will get to explore the story of the prodigal son.

Our kids five to ten years old will join us in the sanctuary for the start of worship and then will be dismissed to head to their classrooms together. They can begin service with their families or sit with Pastor Mary in the front pews. This week we will continue to explore the story of Joseph and his reunion with his brothers. It will be an interactive time to ponder the story together, and we are so excited to share in this special time with our kids!

Discussion Questions for the Table at Home:

  • What do you think it was like for Joseph to see his brothers again?

  • Which character do you most identify with in the story of Joseph and his brothers?

YOUTH

This week we will have our regular youth gathering after worship. We look forward to a meaningful time of discussion, lunch, and connection with our amazing youth!

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for being such a special community of families!

With deep affection for you,

Pastor Lindsay
