Weekly Updates 09.20.2024

Community Movies for Consideration

  • Our community partner The Center for Restorative Justice invites the community to two movie screenings. The first is hosted by Fuller Seminary tonight at 7pm in-person and online titled The Gospel According to Bill Pannell. See a trailer here and register here.

  • The second film is this Tuesday at 5pm, put on by the BJC Center for Faith, Justice and Reconciliation, the Christians Against Christian Nationalism campaign, and this 30-minute documentary explores how voter suppression is tied to white nationalism and is followed by a discussion on how to combat this oppression. Click here for more information.

Sunday

  • Our “History in the Gospel” with Jennifer Wolfe Sunday School class runs Sunday mornings now thru October 27th at 9am in the Parlor. Feel free to join anytime! Also, don’t forget, starting on October 6th is Rene’s class “Spiritual Values in Literature.” Text “Rene” to 626.727.9498 to sign up for Rene’s class so we can order enough copies of Quarantine.

  • Our next (and last, for now) monthly Grief Group meets this Sunday, September 22nd, at 9am in Room 214. This is a space for anyone experiencing grief or loss to be with others in a similar season. Reach out to Jon Rinkus to RSVP. A special thanks to Jon for leading this past Sunday School class for so many subsequent months.

  • Look out for yummy treats again this Sunday, September 22nd, in the Lobby! This time, we’ll add whole items made by Kevin (banana trifle), Saskia (key lime pie), Tina (peanut butter cake) and Jonathan (4-layer gluten-free Cherry Chocolate Black Forest Cake). You may fill out a silent auction form at the Hospitality Desk for these items and see if you win! Smaller baked items will be about $5 each and you may use this link to purchase (choose Oaxaca Mission Trip from the drop-down menu).

  • Join us at 10:30am for worship in the sanctuary! Our scripture this week is Philippians 1:1-6. The nursery will be open as usual for our toddlers and babies. Our kids five years old and up can join us for the first part of worship and then will be dismissed to their classrooms with their leaders. They can sit with their parents or join us in the front rows at the start of service. Our youth are invited to join us for our regular lunch and fellowship after service. The Prayer team will be available at the front of the sanctuary toward the end of the service to pray with those who would like to receive prayer.

  • Our FBCPride Group potluck lunch is set for this Sunday, September 22nd, after worship in Room 214. The LGBTQ+ community, parents and allies 16+ are welcome, and you can read more about the group here. Text “pride” to 626.727.9498 to receive Pride Group texts. Feel free to bring a friend.

  • Our Passive-Aggressive Pickleball group meets this Sunday, September 22nd, at 7pm in the Gym off Union St. Text “pickle” to 626.727.9498 to join the text updates for this group. Email Tim with questions. We have paddles and balls available; bring your parking ticket for validation and a bottle of water.

  • The Friends In Deed food pantry item this week is peanut butter or other nut butters.

Coming Up

  • Join us next Saturday at 9am for our quarterly Men’s Breakfast in the Park off Union St. You won’t want to miss the meal or the time of fellowship together. Text “bacon” to 626.727.9498 to RSVP.

  • Also next Saturday, the Holy Walkamolies hiking group invites you to hike with them at 9:30am. The September hike will be the Trail Canyon Falls in Tujunga. This hike is about 4.5 miles in length with 1,000 foot elevation gain and a fun rope scramble to the bottom of the falls (kids love this!). Because this is the same day and time as the Men's Breakfast, this is mainly for the ladies or anyone not planning to attend the Men's Breakfast. If you would like to carpool, meet at church at 9am or at the trailhead at 9:30am (google "Trail Canyon Trail Parking"). Please note that an Adventure pass is required to park there. Please sign up here so Nicole has a head count.

  • Join us at 12:10pm in the Parlor for thirty minutes of prayer for our American Baptist global servants. If you are interested in joining with this group, please email Jeannette or Judy. This will enable us to send you an email about the specific matters for which we will be praying.

  • Our Yarn Craft Group welcomes any crafty knitters or crocheters to join in crafting fun after worship next Sunday, September 29th, in the Southside Room. Bring snacks to share (optional) and a water bottle. Email Whitney or Justine if you have any questions.

  • Folks ages 55+ are invited to join us on Wednesday, October 2nd, at 12:30pm for a potluck lunch in Room 214. Come prepared to share what’s been happening in your life and warm up your vocal cords for some Community singing with our amazing pianist Paul following lunch. It’s going to be a lively time. Email Pastor Chip with any questions.

  • We invite everyone to celebrate the official ordination of Pastor Lindsay Dorman at a special service on Sunday, October 6th, at 3pm in the Sanctuary. This extra step of ministerial accomplishment is indeed an event to be celebrated and acknowledged together as a community. We hope you all can join us.

Small Groups

  • Small Groups are continuing to launch. At this time, the groups are full; however we would love to start more in the future as we have more volunteer leaders. Please email Pastor Lindsay with questions.
